mixing medias

should i just run mechanical and bio in my ac 70 ? as there is one bag of bio chem zorb in my canister or should i run two carbon bags and a polisher as my canister has scrubbees and bio stars in it.
 
Id use the canister for bio with some mechanical filtration before that and use the HOB for polishing. You can always tweak to your liking once its up. The canister is harder to clean so keep that in mind

Just a bit of FYI....Rena XP1 (or XP s now) is rated at 250gph empty with no head. Filled and running it's about 125gph. I love the XP line and own an XP1, XP2 and 3 XP3's but dont let the numbers mislead you. All manufacturers list the flow rates empty with no head.

Id ditch the ammonia remover and fill up the space with biomedia of some kind. Either of the hobs would be fine as long as you fill them with media as well.

im running the xp L not s... and i think im gonna ditch the marineland and run it with my other marineland 200 on my river tank. im thinking biomax and pot scrubbees in the ac as it doesnt have a biowheel.
 
oh I see. I misunderstood the l for a 1 lol. My apologies. Yeah the L is the old XP3. Great filter for sure! Love the 3 I run and they are by far the easiest to do maintenance on of all the cans Ive used. Biomax is good stuff, but you could save some money if you can find generic ceramic rings. The Biomax might be a bit more porous but probably not by much.

Most LFS will have them but Biomax for 6 bucks sounds pretty good! I'd do that for sure.
 
yep i live in ontario canada, i can buy about 10 lbs for maybe 60 bucks.. but i use pot scrubbers as they are insanley porous
my penguin intake tube runs all the way to the bottom of my tank, pulling up the lowest point of water in my tank.. my ac is on the side and runs just a bit farther down then canister intake..
i was wondering if pointing the return down at the gravel will have the effect of pushing the crud to the intake for the can?
 
thanks for the tip. i sense a new thread for my next plan on breeding live for my clown knife bichir and other meaty lovers.. lol im looking into shrimp.. seems easiest.. havent had any luck with minnows..
