Mixing reptiles. Advice / tips?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
im getting a red eye crocodile skink. I have researched this combo ( anoles \ red eyes) and have seen it work in person. Im always happy to start another tank so if problems occur i will move the anoles.

Bump. Despite the title I have received very little advice. If you were going to mix reptiles/amphibians, and anoles were a definite yes, what would you put with them?

House geckos? Long tailed grass lizards?

with the diurnal anoles and nocturnal croc skinks I think that would work. just be sure lots of cover is given both along the glass and on the ground.

I looked into house geckos and long tailed lizards. I was thinking of getting one of each to go with my anoles. The tank will have tons of plants ( real and fake) and vines. The skink will have multiple hides on the ground as well as the usual food dish and water dish. The tank is completely enclosed so humidity is very easy to maintain. My plan, ( if you can picture it) is to have a bonsai tree in the middle ( real or fake, not sure yet) and small " mountains" on either side going about halfway up the tank. the mountains will be hollow and therefore be a good hide.

That is the problem with a fish website. Lots of people here think that it is okay to throw in a few different kinds of reptiles from all over the world and it will all work out.

If you have to ask about a mixed species enclosure, you shouldn't do it. Take your time, heavily research all the animals you are interested in and make a well informed decision. 95% of the time though, it is best to keep them separate.
Bingo. I've been researching and researching and in my case it should work, but I'm still deciding if it's a good idea. To see people that just throw them together with no thought as to the results..

I opened a thread on a forum full of knowledgeable people. How is that "no thought as to the results."

Besides, I haven't done it yet. I am still researching and experimenting to make sure I can make it work. I moved my anoles into a ten gallon with a white lined gecko two days ago. This is my first experiment. If they co-hab peacefully and successfully I will proceed to adding the crocodile skink ( in a bigger cage ), if not I will remove the gecko and proceed with only the anoles. If any troubles arise a new tank will be set up to separate the different species.

Now, does anyone have any input as to whether this should be a terrarrium or vivarium/ paludarium? I want it to be 50/50 water but not if that poses a risk to the gecko / anoles / skink. Thoughts?

I never said I was referring to you...

Good luck, hopefully it works for you! I'd say you could go palaudarium, but for the lizards it would probably be better to just leave it as a terrarium. Or maybe you could have a quarter of it be water or something.
