Moba grow out thread

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It’s 120”L 36”W 30”T exterior 118x34x28 internal = 487US gal
I have 2 x 40gal sumps for a total system water volume around 515gal

I see that you're using the internal dimensions for the display tank... there's no argument here that they're the more precise measurement.

Yessir, and tbh, the overflows keep the water height at about 27”, so it’s actually closer to 470gal + sump volume 🤗

Mine grow slow as well

Mine grow slow as well, at least the ones I believe must be females are light eaters/slow growers. Of my thirty gibbs, I've had twenty-four for 1 year and the other six have been in the tank for 4 months. All were 3"-5" when they arrived.
  • The largest four (males?) are 10"-11"
  • While the smallest five (females?) are 4"-4.5"
  • The rest are somewhere in between
Males growing from 5" to 10-11" in a year is actually pretty impressive I think mate. Having good protein rich foods, lots of room to move around & great water parameters are prob why you have seen such good growth on the males especially. I would be totally stoked to achieve anywhere near those outcomes!

A friend of mine has been running chemipure blue in his 220gal w a group of 9 wild & 6F1 Kigoma fronts and his nitrates have been almost undetectable, even letting his wc schedule go out to 2 weeks. He still does his big water changes at the 2 week mark to remove other metabolites & reduce the bacterial load from the water column. Depending on cost & life-span I may introduce it to my system, especially since I have 10ppm nitrate straight out of the faucet.

With the inclement weather that swept across the northern states of the US the last 24-36 hours planes out of NY today were delayed and some canceled.
The bloke supplying my moba is gonna check in with his contact at SWCargo and let me know if they have caught up enough to risk shipping Wed into Thurs. I’ve waited 3 months, so if there’s any doubts I want to wait until my 3 days off Tues-Thurs next week. This group is too nice & too valuable to rush the most critical part of this purchase.
For now I will keep watching the same video another 50-100 times 😵‍💫
Will keep y’all posted 🤙🏼

SWC still backed up a bit from Tuesdays cancellations/delays. Current plan is deliver to SW Cargo Monday afternoon next week. Fly to Cinci Tuesday morning. So far the forecast looks good 🙏🏼🇦🇺

Ok, so the 16 moba arrived today at SW cargo for p/u at 6:45pm 🥳

Anthony was very easy to work with and packed the fish individually & extremely well. 2 boxes. The heat packs were still warm. 100% live arrival. The purchase size was 4-5”, the actual range is 3.25” - 4.5” with most in the 3.75” - 4.25” range. I did ask Anthony for 4 of the biggest, 4 smallest & 8 in between hoping for a female heavy group.
Really beautiful blues straight out of the bag. No mooning. I was tryna vent them but they’re just too small to be confident either way.
Float acclimated for 45 minutes. Poured out water into a net over a bucket and introduced to the tank. There’s 2 other Malawi cichlids in the tank that I have sold already, will fish em out in the next day or 2.
Very excited to have this group and to see them grow into big beautiful gibbs in my 10’ tank!
Here’s 11 of the 16. And a short vid on shot 5 mins after the last fish went in right b4 lights out for the night.
