Making a filter from a 5 gallon bucket with a lid that can actually hold in the pressure is HARD. Its not that easy and many think past the pressure. Look for "5 gallon bucket canister filters " you will see many have failed.
true and I thought of that. My opinion there may have been another way than to mess with a fx5.. but if it works for you. then thats all that really matters.
thanks Jgray152 for the questions answered. Maybe you could do a step-by-step video on the modding?
I'll have to agree on the pricing. The FX5 is way more cheaper than an eheim 2262. As much as I would like to get an eheim 2262, I can't afford it. So modding is the only option.
Thanks for the answers, (i just realised you're incharge of the site, ). May try modding it on my next spring break. Would like to know how is your modded FX5 doing now?
I could.... If I remember, look for a video in 2011 summer. I'll see if I can remember to make a permanent design in my Fx5.

Well as you read, I used silicone and have yet to change it so everything I used silicone on failed. Even though I have yet to make a more permanent design, its working great. I have fine filter pads in there now, been in for over a week without clogging. I love it.
If you going to do it, even though I kinda show you how to do it, plan it out first if you are going to make it permanent, Now you "can" revert back to the OE design at anytime, the only issue is you would be cutting that pipe which goes into the pocket. I suppose you could also lengthen it with some pvc though if you wanted to go back to the oe design.
I thought about buying some Fx5s in Bulk, modifying them and selling them. Of course I would need to use something other than egg crate for durability. lol
I have two FX5's on my 220. I am modifying neither. I am pleased with them as is.
Its for some people and not others. Like I said, the Fx5 is fine the way it is, it just has some flaws or faults I don't like which modifying correct resolves.
Hmm, is the plastic tube attached to the intake strainer the same as the one used inside the canister?
Because if it does, I won't have to saw of the pipe as I have a spare piece from the intake pipe I saw off during installation as the pipe is too long for the depth of the tank.
Don't feel like opening up the canister to check it out as the top media is new and still being seeded so I don't want to disrupt the build up of BB.
I remember a thread a while back I think that tested the 2262 filter flow. I do believe it was much less than the 900 GPH pump flow but I think it was still higher than the Fx5.
Hmm.. Interesting.. Im a little late, but I don't know if I'd personally go hacking on a 300$ filter for an improved certain performance for BIO!.. I'd just get another dedicated to bio than risk it ;D
