Moderatly unusual fish to go with peaceful SA cichlids

So, I've been trying to figure out more unusual fish to go with my four 5-6" geophagus abalios, one 2" geophagus (possibly altifrons), two 4" satanoperca jurupari, two 2-3" Acarichthys geayi, one 5" angelfish, two 3" Mesonuta festivus, one 8" uaru a., one 2" uaru a., five 3" hemiodus gracilis, one 6" L-114, one 3" bushynose pleco, and one 5" Ctenolucius hujeta..

Tank is a 125 gal, and has been running for almost two years..

I'm trying to stay away from the cichlids and go for more unusual South American characins, but also have been wondering about some more unusual catfish (not plecos)...

A lfs has another hujeta for $100 but no way am i going to pay that when i got mine for $20..

would love some Boulengerella maculata...:naughty:

so yeah just wanted to see what you guys say would be good ideas to go with my fish (and if i can find something i like, i may trade in some fish for them)

i've got bichirs with my cichlids. they leave each other alone. my psittacus mouthed one the first day it was in the tank, after that they were a-ok. also my datnoid has worked well with my cichlids. the cichlids may push a little but he'll push back. if you do go with a dat wait till the cichlids are bigger than the dat, they will eat almost anything
 
Dwarf Chanchitos if you do want a mellow but colorful cichlid. About 5" max

Australoheros Oblongum or A. Red ceibal.

i've actually got a pink tail chalceus in there with them (forgot to mention it) hes alittle skittish but i am thinking about getting more, not too sure though.....

thinking about taking the live plants out of my 55 and putting the hemiodus in there to give the 125 more room... I also have a crenicichla regani growing out in another tank, waiting to go into the 125 but right now my geos would eat him... lol
 
125 characins w/ cichlids ???? If you can find'em - Big mouth catfish very odd lookin' catfish huge head and mouth, Stripped or Spotted Pike Characin gets about 12" peaceful looks like a gar, or the Volta River Bichir extremly pre-historic lookin' to name a few oddballs you don't see everyday just be aware Characins generally will only eat Live foods and all that comes with it.

yes i know regani are a dwarf, kind of the reason why i wanted one so bad, had a male and female, femal unfortunatly was sucked up filter intake and died.

i was devastated because i've heard there are more males than females (plus the females have the dorsal spots)

3-4" doesnt seem small to go with geophagus.... 2" would seem small IMO

yes there is a possibility the regani could be eaten, but i would rather take the risk with a 3-4" one than a 2" fish... larger fish, less likely to get eaten.

awhile ago i had a seveni that age two pink tailed chalceus of the same size....

don't really want to go there again

yes, peaceful cichlids with larger characins exactly like the stripped or spotted pike characin (Boulengerella maculata/ Boulengerella lateristriga) but i would have to put my smaller fish in another tank...

if a LFS gets either Boulengerella, i will find a way to put the smaller fish in another tank:D

if I was u I would definitly be done adding fish about four fish earlier I hope u have a huge filter if ur load not way past due it will be

have you seen some of the overstocked fish tanks on this forum?

mainly oscars, pacus, etc. that produce alot of wastes... the fish i have produce no where near as much wastes as these fish do... take a look around and see the overstocking of huge predatory fish and compare them to non-predatory smaller fish.

by the way I have three filters on this tank, a rena filstar xp 3 canister, an AC110, and a cheap HOB...
