Mold in fish room

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A dehumidifier is a must along with a moisture meter to monitor the moisture levels in the room.

you will be amazed how much water it pulls out of the air...

bleach and other cleaners will ONLY kill the SURFACE mold. You will NEED to get some mold spray from home depot or lowes to fully kill the mold. i use "mold control" with great success (blue and green bottle $9.XX from lowes"

once the mold is taken care of, set the dehumidifier to to 60 or less.

Cover the tanks as best as you can.

Then i use "damp-rid" instead of rice. Once you buy the container, you can get bags of substrate for cheap and refill as needed. It also has a pleasant smell.

The issue is that condensation is building up where the cold wall and warm, humid air inside the house meet.

I'd recommend three things:

1) Wipe down the places where it's moldy wit Concrobium or similar (inexpensive from HD or Lowes). You can also use white vinegar.

2) Put a circulating fan on places where condensation is occurring.

3) Cover your tanks and get a dehumidifier to reduce the humidity in the air.

Take care of this sooner rather than later!

Can't add much to what the others are saying other than keep the air circulating with vertical floor fans...if its a closed area leave the door open.

A fan or two pointed at the area where condensation is occurring will go a long way...
I would hold off on the fan in the affected area until you are sure the mould has been cleaned effectively. Otherwise you might be spreading the spores.

Lemon Juice and White Vinegar at 5% works too, less toxic than bleach fumes. If you have higher concentration vinegar or lemon juice (industrial) you're good to go.

Some people use hydrogen peroxide too (also in different strengths)

Thanks for the advice on cleaning it up and preventing future growth. Keeping things dry with a fan sounds like a smart idea!
