monitor diet

NO GROUND MEAT for monitors...even chicken or turkey.

Its really very simple. A staple diet of insects for now, dusted with vitamin and calcium supplements.

You could get a roach colony going, all you'd have to do is clean and feed them, and you'll never have to buy another feeder insect again.

yea i have bought a book, and it says nothing about ground chuck.

what does it say.

buying a book isn't enough, you have to READ it.

and to whomever said it, who buys unfertilized eggs?:D
didn't know that about unfert. eggs, thanx.

Once again, while nor necessarily knowing every single detail, you should have a pretty good idea of what your pet should be eating before getting it.

LC, I can't speak for everyone else, but I'm not trying to harp on this to berate you or anything. Its just that you still don't appear to grasp that what you do is not right, and I just want to make sure that you understand that. I know that the mistake has been made: you can't go back in time, "un-buy" the monitor, do your research and then buy it. But even while the deed is done, and we're moving forward, you still have shown no evidence that you research this stuff. There's nothing wrong with asking questions, but you cannot rely on a single source of information (i.e. this site). It's like you just keep coming on here and saying, "ok guys, what do I do next?" Someone says something you think is questionable, you can't just throw your hands on the air and say "I don't know who to believe!" Go out and look into more sources. Books, magazines, online journals, the info is out there. I hate when people claim that it isn't. They're just lazy and don't want to look for it.

Like I said, there's nothing wrong with coming on here and asking questions...but what happens if MFK suddenly folded up, left, and the site went down? What are you going to do if we're not around to answer your questions? Just to put things in perspective...the internet might be out, the petstore might be closed, but once you get a book or magazine, they don't disappear or shut-down. They'll always be there waiting for someone to use them.

Obvously he got his information from some breeder's site. The only people I have seen use ground meat are breeders and entomophobics. You might as well explain the logic behind it, since he is going to keep bugging us until we give a reason.

If you want to keep your monitor healthy, keep it on an insect diet until it is an subadult or adult. Period.

Ground turkey and chicken is only used by breeders for one reason: bulk order. Most breeders have a large collection, and they usually don't care about the well-being of their animals. They order ground meat for cost-efficent reasons.

Starting up a roach or locust farm would be cheaper and healthier than buying ground meat. Why? Most people don't have access to the wholesale price of bulk orders and feeding the feeders would be cheaper than buying the alternative at butcher shops and supermarkets.

i concure with irish...because breeders r cheap

You gotta do research my man. Nothin ticks me off more then people buying an animal and not having a clue how to care for it.:nilly: I don' t know how many dumb arses I've seen buying Burmese Python babies and not realizing they get 20+ feet long. They have no idea that when they're full grown adults you'd have to feed them small pigs and goats.Or the morons who buy iguanas an feed them iceberg lettuce and cat food. Do your research and when you think you read enough, do some more.

I agree. I'm not trying to have a go LC as I've stuck up for you before but omg, you seriously should take alook at least ONE page on the internet before buying this animal. Theres nothing wrong with asking questions no, but you seem to have problems with gettting all these animals to feed, drink, whatever. Maybe you should take a hint and spend TIME setting up the right enclosure, the time landscaping it, providing the temperature and humidity it needs and most importantly FINDING OUT WHAT IT EATS! Jesus, your comment about not being able to know everything the monitor can eat before you buy it is just pathetic. You should know everything it eats before you decide to get one! I'm really trying not to have a go here, but it just seems you dont take peoples advice..why not? Why ask for it? And then when you get put right you just defend yourself? Heres a thought.. if you think your responsible enough to own a reptile than be responible enough to KNOW when your wrong and accept it! And even better, to correct your mistakes and provent them from happening again. As for the poll you did on 'what pet should i get next?' Do everybody a favour, start caring for the animals you have properly before you think whats next.. and btw, you shouldnt just get a pet for the sake of gettting one (which you are because you asked OTHER people which one to get!?!) you should get one because you have your heart set on that particular one.. I wanted a Green Iguana for about 3-4 years.. and didnt get one till then, I researched and researched and waited till I was ready to get one :) :) :)
