Where Palm Trees Grow
I went to my pet store last week and happened to see what looked like a baby monitor but it did not look like it was a true monitor. Kinda looked like a mini kamodo dragon it was very social and came right up to me when I looked it its tank. It looked like a really cool pet and I might get it if it's still there but what do you guys think it is? They had a 2 foot water monitor that looked nothing like it. It was a brownish color, any info on this?

porbly a savannah monitor, i wouldn't get it if I were you, they are not for in experienced keepers and grow to be about 4 feet in length
start off with something simple then move your way up

dont know but sounds like it would make great pet if it's already that personable at young age, i would get it as long as you know you could house it even if it turned out to be a monster LOL (though your in florida so you could also put it in your back yard, huge lizard in your fence would def make robbers think twice lol

The pet store couldn't tell you what species it is? Sounds like a sav from your description, but I'm always leery of buying such animals at pet stores; often times they haven't gotten appropriate nutrition/UVB so you end up with a vet bill.

I did not bother to ask for some reason I don't know why. I looked up some sav's and that's what it looks like. What do you guys suggest to be a good starter monitor?

i would go with some ackies, they are very active and I could spend hours watching mine,
and you only need a fairly small enclosure
I would go with a 4x2x2 foot enclosure with a 130f basking spot and 18" of good old dirt

That's the perfect starter monitor!

Sav's are great, I know a couple people that have one, and I'll one day get one as well (when I get enough space). But taming these guys can be very tricky. They can become extremely aggressive, and in such a strong body can end up poorly for whomever they're angry with. But if brought up probably which isn't actually to difficult if you have a good head on you shoulders they can be amazing pets. Once full grown they need basically their own room...

From the way it was acting at the shop that particular sav sounds like it would be a good one though. In my experience the more flighty fearful young monitors are the ones that turn out aggressive.
