Honestly, do not get something because it is "Beginner" because then you might not be happy with it. If you put the effort forth to research and get a large enough enclosure, get one that YOU like. If you get something because it is "Beginner" and you don't like it, you will get sick of it.. if you get something you really want and do the research, you will be fine.
I've seen full grown Sav Monitors, NO WAY one could kill me. Maybe a toddler, no way a 14 year old.

Sav's are pretty cool lizards to own, and a lot of places will tell you they are a good 'beginner' monitor. They apparently tame down relatively easily compared to other species, and despite growing 3-4ft long, that's not big by monitor standards.
If you like it, and can house it in the long run (I think an 8x4ft enclosure is the going rate for an adult, so even better if you're any good at DIY), it would make a good pet choice. Don't go believing every anti-reptile newspaper horror story.

I would agree with this. The only real downside is pet store sav's are 99% wild caught, but if you've got some herp experience or know someone who does you should be able to pick out a nice healthy one without much trouble.

Wow! A retic, huh? Beautiful snake. I dont keep herps anymore, but I have to admit that even when I did, I knew a retic would be too much snake for me to handle. Not to mention, I really don't think that I could handle feeding them rabbits and chickens. I had a mouse factory though, 100's of mice for a while and that didn't bother me to use them for food, but I know I couldn't handle using bunnys for food. Yeah, go ahead, call me a girl!

I think a retic may be kind of risky in house with toodler but yet again if he has a complelty safe and secure cage there is nothing to fear, also he didnt tell wich kind of retic that was, could be a dwarf one
My rents say they are scared of Sav's, But they seem to think Ackies are cool, pretty odd, I think Ackies look a little creepier. But Ackies are better for a beginner like me, so it works out.
