If i can throw my two cents on the table, I believe we could combine the two. Have a section of knowledgeable members and take what stickies or good info from there and write up an episode or two and test it. Throw it out there and see how things play out. If one doesn't play out we still have the other to fall back on. It gives us a solid base to work off of and a safety to fall into should one fail. It's a massive responsibility to take on and I agree we would need the support of more than a handful of our most knowledgeable members plus the ones who can properly answer queries and can drive the thread or threads forward. Just my two cents worth

4- Charge the Curators with identifying the best quality threads- separating the wheat from the chaff- and creating a summary of the thread, identifying the key things required about the thread that needs to be searchable, and making said summaries. Only Curators would be able to post in this area.

This would serve as MFK's table of contents to allow newer members to find the most useful stuff. Think Planet Catfish's Cat-E-Log, but for threads, instead of species profiles.

What do you all think?

I really like this idea.

I know for me personally I’d trust reading up on species profiles on here over any random website. Even better if the info used to make up these profiles will be based on firsthand reported experiences.
And since there are bound to be some species that firsthand information isn’t available it could be a fun and challenging project for keepers to take on to keep new information/profiles rolling in after things are more established.
There would need to be a system of reporting for X period of time in a dedicated thread and then it would be eligible to be considered for a species profile.

How all this would be worked out I feel is way over my head. Hopefully all this doesn’t come off as gibberish ?

I want to see this forum grow and thrive. I enjoy it so much here and you long time members are the ones who truly make it a wonderful and enriched experience.

I see lots of good intentions here and admire people who want to see trustable info.
The fact is imo it won't change a thing.
The guy with the pacu in the posted video more than likely knew what size it would grow to but got it regardless.
People either care about these things and say no. Or carry on regardless despite all the info research can provide.
I love that people care but the issue is not information based its people based. They either care or they don't that will never change. The information is already there.

I have to agree with this: you could take a nice MFK book and give it to free to those big YouTubers but they'd probably just throw it on a table and forget about it. Their priorities (and objectives) are simply different than many of ours.

Similar thing with our Stickies: plenty of great info in these, incl. species profile/care sheets, but you still have (esp. newer) people coming onto the site and instead of taking a few minutes to peruse the Stickies they just ignore them, make a new post and ask a question that has been answered a million times before. Further more than a few of these people are really only looking for an answer that supports what they want to do; and even when given great advice by experienced members many end up just doing what they wanted to do in the beginning (with predictable results).

This doesn't preclude revamping the site, just something to take into consideration whether it would actually be worth all the time and effort (kind of a "if it ain't broke don't fix it thing."). That said I for sure think MFK needs to get more involved in the video game (via both YouTube and Facebook), which is no small undertaking itself (if done right).

Been watching this thread for a few days now, seems to have evolved from a proposed book to a site reboot.

I think the book wouldn't work, purely because it would be very hard to put together and very expensive to publish , therefore very expensive to buy. Also it's such a niche thing, keeping monsters that it would have limited appeal. I can't see it being on the shelf in too many shops and online sales would be hard to promote.

I do think a YouTube channel would get more attention, no idea how or who would be in charge of content. Can't imagine anyone with the time or cash to fly around the world filming members tanks. Would be a fun job I must admit.

The site does have lots of info but as has been said already it's a bit hard to find at times. The journal idea is good , I'd like to see someone buy a fish and/or tank and start a thread. If somehow they commit to update regularly and post the good and bad it would be very interesting.it wouldn't have to be for the fishes entire life as thebiggerthebetter thebiggerthebetter said but would require a fair commitment. To work it would have to be locked to everyone except the OP so they don't get inundated with advice/nonsense. Wouldnt even have to be monsters, a pair of kribensis in a 30G would be an example of an interesting beginner tank to discourage people to get an RTC for their first fish.
Another option would be a new section called "care sheets or fact sheets" all new and freshly done, possibly by the curators. A template would have to be set so they are all have the same info. I think it's a more manageable task to do a bunch of these than sort through 15 years of threads trying to find what's good or not. It would be a simple and clean reference section to look at before diving into the forum and asking questions.

Also, I don't want to be as cynical as Stanzzzz7 Stanzzzz7 but he does have a point. Either way it's worth a try and would freshen up the site a bit.

C'mon nobodies that cynical.

Just wanted to add. Information on monster fish has been around for a lo g time. Long before this forum.
I bought this book about 30 years ago.

Like I said the information is there people just choose to ignore it.

Like others have said ive been following along thinking on posted ideas and the one the op posted. I hate to say this but its kind of true books are dead. I love books but in reality with the invention of the internet and blogs, vlogs, forums books are a thing of the past.
I really like the idea of a profile section that can not be changed by the masses like the cat-elog. I think of all the ideas that may be most helpful, especially to newbs when they post will this arowana fit in a 30g tank someone "mod" could direct them to profile section in a pm and delete their post. When they have a prevalent question it can be posted for the masses to argue over.
The species profiles could have links (I believe this was suggested above) to on going threads that someone "curators" feel are informative and current enough to capture attention and further the persons understanding of said fish. Things like feeding, treatment, housing could all be looked at from one point. But it would start as the ultimate answer to that person's question.
As said before the info is out there in here everywhere its just not that easy to find and alot of people are to lazy to dig for themselves and they just post more "pollution" that has been posted multiple time in the last month. Those conversations all go the same way the op gets confused posters get frustrated and someone gets banned.

deletion is a bit rude, especially to the strawberry generation

would propose the 'mod' attached the link in the reply and lock the thread instead.

but for it to make sense, the link should include housing, feeding, common sicknesses, etc. Basically, a all in one.

But care has to be taken on which threads to remain open and which to lock
