I should have taken a pic. It was in a a Chinese fish store. It blew me away. Maybe 16 inch is an exaggeration but he was in the 12 to 14 inch range 100 percent!

From time to time, people claimed monster size GT. Without a pic and a ruler to prove it, it's unverifiable.

Here is a pic of my dead GT. Without a ruler next to him, I could claim he were 14" too. Mine is an Malaysian strain GT from a Chinese store too, and lived to 7 year old. He was doing fine and locked jaw with a sysnspillum tankmate a week before, then suddenly stopped eating and died a week later as his time was up.

I see as much variation in rivs as I do in midevils. I've seen some that are kept in a pretty healthy tanks, big tanks at that, and they're only 8" or so.
That particular cichlid has so much variation is its unreal. It's one thing that scares about buying a riv is that you can have a really stunner or you can end up with a pretty ugly one lol.
So before you say this fish is stunted or in poor health, you don't know that. Maybe he was sick at the end of his life but it could also be genetic. Not really a reflection of the owner.

No no the one I seen was much bigger then yours. He was taller and longer

I agree. There is much variation of GT quality from LFS, depending on the source. Florida pond raised GTs are highly variable, and not as consistent and high quality as Asian strain. Asian selectively bred GT to look like FH with high body, big hump and thick orange saum. White saum is considered low grade and culled in Asia. From what I read, wild caught GT are quite different too, with longer body, even mix of white and orange saum, and more aggressive.

Glad my new GT was shipped from a good, private breeder in Asia lol

Nice GT. Good size on that one! GTs can get to 12". It's not easy, but not too difficult either. There are still secrets to keeping these beautiful fish.
