I was wondering how quickly do adult cichlids pair up. I have had a large female jag in my cichlid community tank for a few months now. I recently bought a 13" male and thought I would put him in to see how they got on together. The female immediately started following him around and her colours brightened up a lot. Within half an hour they had taken half the tank to themselves and were chasing all the other fish away from their cave. They them started to dig a big hole in the gravel. I have put them in their own tank now and they get on great.
Have they paired up and is it common to happen so quickly?
I am now hoping to breed them.

Sounds good to me.Nice pair you have! Wish I could find a big female:(

lol so are you still tryna get one in your area or anywhere that can ship it to you? You'll get one soon ;)

It's more common in younger cichlids to pair up quickly. But it sounds like you got really lucky with those two. IME larger cichlids tend to become defensive of their territory, especially when another large cichlid is introduced. But the fact that your fish immediately paired up and started pushing the others out of their space is a very good sign. Congratulations!

very pretty jags...hope you have lots of little ones soon!

Thanks, the female is about 10" and really chunky. If I'm really lucky it would be nice if they grew to 15" and 12".

Nice pair of Jags. You won't see any more growth from them if you keep them spawning. You would have to separate them.

That is awesome man, very cool. I can only wait till I can have a tank big enough to have a pair of jags. I think they are one of the coolest fish, I really cant wait!

Nice looking pair. When i intreduced my female to the male they paired up instantly as well. I had eggs with in 2 weeks. Was really cool to watch. So i guess it can happen pretty quick.
