I had one of those. Mine was about 14 inches

I have kept them and they can survive under ice in flowing water
Here is an even bigger American salamander, one I have not kept, the Hellbender. They live to 29 years and get to 29"

i've never kept one but after seeing a setup at the zoo with about 8 or so in there i've thought about it cool looking ..

I tried keeping one in a 55gal, and the pleco killed it- I reccomend a species tank
