Monster pond stocking?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
+1 if you have a power failure your screwed, and the cost of heating alone in winter will get stupid , get some wels in there lol :D

You know what guys?

I think this was a little too ambitious for me right now, and I think all of you saved a bunch of fish from me freezing them.

I'm still going to do the pond, but I think I will do a natives pond instead.
Thanks!

We've got the same prob in UK no chance of outdoor ponds its too cold most of the year here heating them would be for millionaires :D , what sort of natives you got in mind over there ?

A couple of tips I've learned about building a pond in colder climates:

1. Make it deep. The deeper the better. The ground temperature (the deeper you go) is much more consistent/stable than the surface temps. I think once you get to about 4' deep, the temps stay in the 50F range. This will help prevent your pond from completely freezing over during cold spells.

2. Design it so that you can turn the waterfall off in the winter time. In the winter when it's consistently below freezing, a waterfall is going to act like a giant chiller...exposing a constant stream of pond water to that freezing cold air is going to cause your water temps to plummet.

3. Run a large air stone in order to prevent the surface of the pond from completely freezing over.

Good luck with your build. I think the decision to stick with natives is a good one, both for your pocketbook and or the fish.

Nice choice! Im glad u didnt take it the wrong way, and are still going forward with ur project, my stock choice is still koi and albino channels for u. They can all be seen well on a black liner and are very active and owner responsive fish. I have a small koi pond on my sun porch with about 12-14 and its very enjoyable to have a ball of fish go crazy for you when u walk in the room. Nothing like hand feeding 30" albino channels either :) they are by far one of my all time fav. Fish to keep even while owning alot of the tropical stock u were thinking about.

And just in case you ever went for a tropical pond, a gas fired water heater on a thermostat will heat the pond for a fraction of the cost as typical electric heaters. With a couple modifications of course. You can even use propane bottles to power it.
