I garbage picked several tanks when I lived on long island.My friend said he still sees tanks out at the curb all the time down there.People dont throw away anything good where I live now.

i rember now, one of my plecos i bought a garage sale for 7 dollars, and my neihgbor gave me my other one. 
classifieds before xmas...people selling for extra cash is a good way to get tanks. You can also substitute a tank for a large round pool, like those found at http://www.aquaticeco.com/. I think someone got a 600 gallon one with a viewing window for around 650...
