I finished my natural background project for my 55 gallon tank today. I also did some pool filter sand as recommend by quite a few of you here on MFK. I also have a few pieces of driftwood. I am currently running a aquaclear 110 power filter and I also purchased an AC70 for the other half of the tank to prevent any dead zone issues. I will be heading to the LFS tomorrow to pick out a couple of plants and I will be checking out their selection of fish for my tank. The tank has been cycled for quite some time now with everything except the background but I will still give it some time before I start adding all of the fish. My main question being, what fish would work the best with my set-up. I would love to have some very colorful fish that really catches the eye. I would like to have a large school mixed in there but I would also like to do cichlids, so preferably something less aggressive/territorial that will go well with a large school of tetras, danios, or what have you. Any ideas? I'm completely open at this point so I would really like to hear everyone's input.

I would do a South American-themed stock with that current setup (plus most plants from LFS's are South American). You could do a school of rummynose tetras, a school of Corydoras, a pair of Apistogramma, and either a pair of discus (or angelfish) or a group of six discus (or angelfish).

I would too, except I wouldn't do discus. Angels would be fine, but might pick off smaller tetras. What about something like a pair of blue acara?

that background looks awesome, so does the whole tank cant wait to see it filled with whatever you decide to put in there

That is just amazing! The background gives it so much depth! It doesn't look like a 55g to me, but WAY bigger.

I'll think of something good for you :)

My first thought was Gold Saum/Green Terror, but that tank's too small :(

Hmmm... I think an armoured bichir would match the tank's personality!
