- Spawn #1 Click on link here http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?476010-It-s-Monsters-Turn!!-Peruvian-Mono-s-BREED!-We-ve-got-EGGS-fellas

- Date: 05/01/12

- Species: Peruvian Mono's

- Age & size: Male, 5yrs, 20" / Female 5yrs, 15"

- Size of tank: 260gal

- Water temp: -88 degrees

- Water change schedule: 30% Every other day / Add salt

- Water Parameters: Ideal / Soft

-Filtration: (2) FX5’s / (2) overhang 400 pro filters / 1200gal hr 50gal sump bio filter / power heads for circulation & flow

- Other tank occupants: None

- Daily Diet: A mixture of Hikari Jumbo CarniSticks, Hikari Massivore Delite, Azoo 9 in 1 Arowana Sticks, TetraCichlid Jumbo Sticks, large freeze-dried krill & a turtle mix with dried grass hoppers, mill worms etc. in it that I feed daily. Coupled with Large whole raw shrimp, silver sides, shiners & Trout.

- Decor & Scaping: Bare bottom tank, large flat rocks, few large fake plats, drift wood and a pot plate all at one end of the tank.

- Number of eggs in spawn: Estimated at around 800

- Leave or pull eggs?: Left the eggs with the parents

- Lessons learned?: Spawn was weak in numbers from the beginning with only 800. I opted to leave eggs with parents, I found this to be a mistake because by the second day the parents had rubbed most all the eggs off the rock. As I watched, I felt the position of the rock made the parents have to cram into a small corner and around other décor causing this. It appeared the parents would jockey for position over the rock and to guard them but ended up rubbing their bellies over it and detaching the eggs from the rock. The detached eggs would then roll around on the bare bottom tank and was now at the mercy of the currents / flow, either all piling up together in a spot on the bottom or sucked up into the filtration. Also something to note is the eggs that detached and had been carried off to another part of the tank (now in a pile) was completely ignored by the parents…

- Questions: Can eggs that have been detached from the surface where they were laid….Still hatch? Will eggs that have detached and pile up in large numbers still hatch?

- Spawn #2

- Date: 05/19/12

- Species: Peruvian Male Mono & Unknown Green colored Mono Female

- Age & size: Male, 5yrs, 20" / Female ?yrs, 17"

- Size of tank: 260gal

- Water temp: -89 degrees

- Water change schedule: 30% Every other day / Add salt

- Water Parameters: Ideal / Soft

-Filtration: (2) FX5’s / (2) overhang 400 pro filters / 1200gal hr 50gal sump bio filter / power heads for circulation & flow

- Other tank occupants: None

- Daily Diet: A mixture of Hikari Jumbo CarniSticks, Hikari Massivore Delite, Azoo 9 in 1 Arowana Sticks, TetraCichlid Jumbo Sticks, large freeze-dried krill & a turtle mix with dried grass hoppers, mill worms etc. in it that I feed daily. Coupled with Large whole raw shrimp, silver sides, shiners & Trout.

- Decor & Scaping: Bare bottom tank, large flat rocks, few large fake plats, drift wood and a pot plate all at one end of the tank.

- Number of eggs in spawn: Estimated at around 5000+

- Leave or pull eggs?: Pulled the eggs one day after they were laid & placed into a 20gal hatch tank with sponge filer and power head for flow

- Lessons learned?: This time I repositioned the decor in a more open area to prevent the parents from rubbing the eggs off like in the first spawn.. It seemed to work but I feel I still had too much decor in the tank and so the eggs were spread out and scattered all over the different decor...It would probably be better for fertilization by the male if the eggs were condensed and all in one place to increase the odds and number of fertilized eggs. Next time I'll opp to remove everything but One large flat rock lifted by a base.. I'm also questioning the power head in the egg tank and the flow needed for the eggs.. Maybe too much flow for that lil tank unnecessarily detaching eggs from surfaces.. I may want to only use a large air stone & a pump next time -

- Questions: I still am unsure if eggs that have been detached from a surface where they were laid….Still hatch?

Here's a few pics and clips of this last spawn -

I also noticed a large number of wigglers in the egg tank this morning before I took off to work :naughty: - I turned off the power head.

Goood job!
Keep up on the journal.
I hope this works for your other species as well.
Cant wait to see some wiggler pics.

Alright, I have about 20 swimmers left out of all of that... I had some issues with removing all the unhatched eggs & rotten eggs and so had water quality problems that I believe added to the overall death toll due to spoiled water. I have revised a plan to correct this problem in the next go around though.. But I will say it is pretty hard to get all the egg debris out without taking wigglers too.. If anyone has advice please share it with me. Thx!!

Here's two short clips of a few of the lil guys, not much to see but is something -
