moon lighting

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have 4 blue lunar lights on my 55g community and I love them. There are many plecos and small cats that I only see when the moonlights are on. I'll try to get a decent pic, but it isn't easy at all.

I also have moonlights in a couple tanks. Looks cool at night and you get to see the nocturnal fish!

Drs. Foster Smith still sell the IceCap LED moonlight strip. A bit pricey however. My guess that's why the single Lunar Lights are more popular.

Moonlights are my speciality! What do you intend to do with the moonlight? Attract nocturnal fish?

When it comes to moonlights there are a few methods to look at, as well as what you are trying to achieve. Ice-cap, and single LED moonlights are decent, but don't have the punch that the moonlight strips have. I personally use 3 types of moonlights now. R2 strip moonlights are my preference, and then incoporated moonlights in two PC hoods. The R2's have 22 LED per 24". I have 6 blue LED's on my 135, and 2 White LED's on my wifes 55. The white moonlights are more natural looking, and very nice IMO. THe blue are great (better with a choppy surface).

Here is a link with a few different choices of moonlights. The PFO light is amazing, but pricy. I have not tried the Aqua medic moonlight.

If you feel comfortable with it, build your own. Get a few high power LEDs, a wall-wart power supply and a limiting resistor. All available from shadeo rack, Or ebay if you want to pay shipping. It's low voltage, just silicone all the connections.

I love the look, I personally use them. It might just be me, but I have had more success breeding fish since I started using the blue led lights. I haven't changed anything else but the use of them. But no for sure proof. That is just from first had experiance with my tanks.
