more PVC overflow help

can i leave like half of the opening on the elbow out of the water? and i want as many GPH as possible. i will have some high current loving fish, but dont know how many GPH the pump should be

No, the water level should be at the top of the elbow. (if it's working right that's where it will stay anyway)

FWIW, I'm flowing 600gph through one of mine.

what fish are you putting in there?
Keep in mind you don't need to "over filter" with a wet/dry. All you will do is waste power.

can you modify the the picture and point to exactly what u mean...cause i biult one like that to see how it worked with 1/2" pipe and it drained faster then my pump could keep up and the water level in the tank dropped about 1" so the tank looked like it had a ton of evaporation.

You know the part of the overflow where you wanted to drill holes? Well at the top of that is the intake elbow. The top of that elbow dictates the water level. So if the water level in your tank is 1" under, then raise the elbow 1 inch. Its so simple.

Now i understand thanks. lol so simple yet i just couldnt see it

Quiet One 780gph at 0head hieght pump is 47bucks at petsmart.?

That might be too much pump.......
What fish do you have that need so much flow? You really dont need to turn it over very fast with a wet/dry. If you need to add some more circulation, add a powerhead:)

Big pumps use a lot of energy and sometimes generate unwanted heat.

ya i keep my house around 80 so my tanks are usually that warm. im justing keeping african cichlids but i like alot of water movement. the next pump down is only 580gph at 0head height

...Those overflows can handle 600 gph ...

I flow tested one inch pipe and in a gravity fed situation, I could only get 337 gph. Who ever started the 600 gph myth was only guessing.

That's strange, I'm flowing almost 600gph through one of mine.
