mosquito eating fish

The most common and effective naturalistic control of mosquitoes is offered by mosquito-eating fish. Mosquito fish , for example, can eat 100 to 500 mosquito larvae per day. They play an important role in mosquito control in ponds, canals, irrigated fields and some other freshwater sources. Small backyard ponds can be stocked with shubunkins.

Any fish that can survive the winter will work. Ideally smaller fishes such as mosquito fishes and minnows will work. Goldfishes and kois will work but they get too big and like to uproot soil in potted plants. Also predators such as herons and raccoons can see them easily because of their color and size. Depending on where you are located, there are government agencies that have free fishes that they bring to you or possibly you have to pick up that is use for controlling mosquitos. In CA, it is the county's vector control that gives those out. You just have to call them and tell them you have a pond and in need of fishes to control mosquitos. Good Luck.

I just cant see my parents spending more money on the shipping of the dang mosquito fish than the fish themselves cost. lol

simply increasing the water flow often does the trick. still/stagnent water = mosquitos. personally I'de snag a group of flag-fish.. most LFS carry them or will gladly order them for you. or as suggested contact your local DNR to see if any resources are available for you. a group fo female bettas will also do the job real well if it's a stagnant/still pond ( they would need to br brought in over the winter though). where a panfish might not do well in low aerated water.
