Despite them being just fish, I can appreciate the power and ability of a fish to hunt defend itself, be dominant, etc. This usually translates into physical characteristics like a large body, teeth, nuchal hump, personality, etc...things that I can appreciate and find interesting. I only used the term bad ass because you did. I guess i might still use it but more like this fish is bad ass, but not that it is a bad ass. Again I'm not trying to create an argument rather just explain the reason for the post. I get your frustration with posts like this, but I don't see it any different than asking who the best boxer, mma fighter, baseball, or football team is/was.

As far as hunting and predation each fish has evolved to fit perfectly into their respective niche in the environment. If they weren't capable they would not exist i.e. starve. For example to put an ambush predator such as an Oscar into an open water environment the Oscar is at a great disadvantage, to put an open water predator such as an umbee into a weed choked lagoon the umbee would be at the disadvantage. So one is not weaker than the other they are each a perfect fit for what they do
Therefore I call this apples to oranges if the peacock bass needed dovii like teeth to survive it would have them just as if the dovii did not need the dentition it would not have them. In nature homefield means everything adapt or die..

It is quite a bit more complex than asking who is the best boxer, mlb player, mma fighter etc. Because when comparing different species you are not comparing boxer to boxer, mma fighter to mma fighter etc. For example put Floyd mayweater on a golf course with tiger woods what happens? Now put tiger in the ring with Floyd what happens? See where I'm going here
