But they are different sp. so they should be a hybrid. It's no different crossbreeding h. Caprintis and h. Deppi. H. Cyano and h. Caprintis ARE different sp. Just because you people only call this fish a Texas in common name doesn't mean they are the same fish. People really need to stop using common names because it is misleading at times.

They are not that different at all other than location and different dot formation, infact look up origins of the Texas cichlid and its pretty obvious its just an evoked carpintis that found its way into texas that's part of the reason those two fish will breed like convicts, I call the carpintis green Texas because most people wouldn't know what fish I'm talking about if I didnt but there not a regular hybrid, its an interspecific hybrid, means a cross of two animals in the same genus, although it is still a hybrid there very closely related and look very similar so the offspring don't exactly have that hybrid look, I should have said its a hybrid though your right I've just never looked at hybrids of extremely similar fish as real hybrids if that makes any sense lol

Couldn't agree more, Duane.

Trying to split hairs around exactly which man-made fish are OK...and which aren't doesn't make sense to me.

And if the point of the thread is to call out the most colorful fish varieties, why would it even matter whether a fish is wild-type or developed by man to be more colorful than what's found in nature.

Kind of like a thread about which is the most colorful carp...and not including koi ;)

Matt

Seems there should be a sub forum called "Line bred/Hybrid/Ornamental Cichlids" and this post may have been separated into Most Naturally occurring Colorful C/S Amer Cichlid, or Most Artificially Colored some time in the past been a C/S Amer Cichlid.
Where say, a healthy, well raised xC bocourti or C nicaraguense would fit in the 1st group
and EBGD or line bred severum (such as the 1st starter pic in the thread)or flowerhorn, turquoise discs, etc would be in the 2nd.
It is really a bit incongruous to try to compare something produced by man made manipulations with natural selection.

A true stunner you have there!

My True Parrot lets off some amazing colours at times, but I'm never able to catch them in photos :( Bright blues, purples and greens...
