just out of curiosity what is the most expensive fish and how much does it cost?

Hirohito the Japanese Emperor used to have an annual KOI auction at his palace when he was alive. Since all the CEO's from the big japanese companies attended the prices got out of hand as they really just wanted to out do every other CEO and it is reported that on three seperate occasions the bidding exceeded $1,000,000 US$ for 1 koi.

At the Japanese annual Koi show $50,000 to $200,00 US$ is more the norm I have been told by KOI hobbyists and watching videos taken at the show.

Whatever the actual highest price for a single fish the KOI would be it.

Among Tropical fish it would be the Asian arowana. There are many avid hobbyists from Singapore on this site and I am sure they would know the amounts paid. Also I am sure that the fish would have been sold in either Singapore, Japan, Malaysia or Germany. Most of the quality fish are sold in these areas because the hobbyists in those countries are willing to pay for quality.

In 1984 several Merodontis Tigrinus catfish sold in Japan for $15,000 US$ each.

By 1986 the price had dropped to $6,000 in Canada for one.

In 2001 at the ACA Shark Aquarium in New Jersey had more than 30 babies in stock and were selling them for $295 each

and now you can buy a tig online for less 150 or even less.

I was told that tigrinus are abundant in the wild its just that there was no demand in the hobby back then and thats why the prices were high since nobody imported them. Dont know if its true though.

Kois are definitely the baller fish of them all.

my lfs was selling a bumblebee grouper for a little over $1000... the poor thing got all bloated with air and was floating upside down for awhile and died.

I once heard about a Flowerhorn having some pattern on it which was a chinese symbol for luck ( It was natural not a tatoo) and I think it sold for over $1 million.

the black markings on the side of a flowerhorn sometimes help you to see lucky numbers and such, myth has it that someone had a FH and saw that weeks lottery numbers and won. only the lucky or blessed can see it or something. asia is a world away from the UK and its interesting to see cultural differences in the way luck is perceived. i have thee flowerhorns and must say ive had good times the last few years but i prefer to not believe in luck. at one time FH's were selling for copious amounts of money, but they seem to be out of fashion in recent times

I purchased a vampire pleco for 50.00 canadian I think that is about 40-45 american. Cool pleco but it is always hiding . I've had it for 9 months and only catch ocasional glimpses as it moves around on the back sides of my driftwood

$150 each on two t-gars, $130 7"ATF, $170each on two leichtardi aros, 3 $40 plecos, $50 jaguar is the most expensive part of my collection's debt! But like them all and plan on soon getting a tigrinus and black aro!?

koi take the cake.

Oddball, any more info on this 1,000,000 reward?
