Once upon a time, when I was younger and had more money than sense, I drove from my home in suburban Detroit to Youngstown Ohio. There I met Don D., who used to travel to Mexico collecting cichlids. He was responsible for introducing several fish to the hobby back in the 1980`s. Anyway, he had a huge male grammodes which were very rare back then, I just had to have. As I recall it was almost a four hour drive. I paid him $200 for that fish along with the gas making it quite expensive, to me at least.
The sad part of the story is that this magnificent ten inch beast would not eat for me. I offered him everything and he just never responded. He had immaculate water and a 125 all to himself with plenty of hiding places. In the end he crocked on me.
Since then I have never spent near that on a single fish. What I lacked in patience back then I now have. I will spend good money on hard to find fish but not for fully grown monsters. Buy them young and let them grow. That way they can adjust to conditions and live long happy lives.
