Most frustrating thing about your job.

I work in a Hawaiian BBQ place in Texas. So when 'locals' come in calling themselves 'local's' is frustrating. Because they are in fact not local since they are from Hawaii , and give me a hard time for being from the state that we are in.

"If you love what you do, you wont work a day in your life."

I havent worked in 8 years....lol

Ahh... there lies the difference

I have felt every single day of the last three years of my life.

Actually thats a lie... I feel like my days are on a continuing loop.

Wow, I really like my job. It allows me to see and do a lot of things that most people experience on television. Example: working on a pot boat or being on a boat during a really bad storm. Some of the things I do people pay to do and I get paid to do it. Example: watching whales and other marine mammals. And I have experienced things that I never would have thought of. Example: almost getting knocked off the deck of a boat by a 30 - 40 ft wave after it came over the bow of the boat. Now my wife gets frustrated because she never knows when I will be home and for how long. Currently, I will be home on vacation on Monday till the last week in July.

There are many things that i don't like about my job, ranging from customers to jerks on the road. (I drive a lot for work)

But the biggest pain in my rear would be me asking for a raise and being told no, he can't afford it. Then the very next day, my boss shows up to work with another new car that he bought entirely on impulse.

Seriously, this is what my boss owns for vehicles:
2006 Porsche 911 Turbo
2009 Subaru STi
2004 Toyota Landcruiser
2002 Toyota Tundra
2009 Toyota Tundra (yes, he has two tundra's)
2009 Ducati monster 1100 (He gave is 2008 Monster to his son)
1954 Oval Window Beetle (fully built engine, it's badass, 400bhp or so)
1967 Mini Cooper x3 (yup, 3 of them. two built for racing, one is completely stock)
A Custom Harley, a guy I work with built it for him, cost somewhere around $80k.
12 or so YZF50's. Yes, 12 little 50cc sportbikes.
The other day he said he wanted a Smart Car.

Funny part, he drives the STi or the new Tundra daily. The Porsche only comes out in the summer (obviously). I rarely see the old Tundra or the Landcruiser. I've only seen him drive the stock Mini once, the two built for racing have never been raced. I've seen him ride the Ducati a few times, I've only ever seen the Harley once. As far as I know, the Beetle hasn't been driven in years. He takes the little YZF50's out once a week with his friends in the summer.
Just this year, he bought two cars, one motorcycle, spent two weeks in Vegas, the entire month of January was spent in Panama, a few weeks in California. He has also bought two houses. But he can't "afford" to give me a raise.

well you might hate me for this but here is the ? since you brought up asking for a raise. Please try to read this without getting personally offended friend I am writing this to you as a business person.

1. what do you do for a living and what do you get paid/ hour
2. how long have you been working for the person
3. how has your performance been have you gone above and beyond what is your job description or what you were hired for.
4. in regards to your respective field of employ do you have other prospects that would pay you higher or is your present wage scale above industry standards.

now, you are really gonna hate me for this but WHAT BUSINESS IS IT OF YOURS TO DECIDE YOUR WAGE BASED ON WHAT YOUR BOSS OWNS :screwy:

How long has he worked for what he has? I will make it personal here.

Take myself, I have been in the restaurant industry since I was 12 years old when I got part time work in the restaurant that my sister was waitressing in cause they thought I was a cute kid. I have spent so many hours working without pay to get to the tope of the pile in regards to chefing.

If someone were to look at where I am at this present moment as an employee and they were to ask me for a raise there would be considerations made by me, but I dont hand out raises simply because the employee thinks they deserve one.

If an employee of mine were to look at what I have and make a judgement of me based on that I would really not take lightly to it.

Sure I own over 30k worth of aquarium stuff.
Sure I own property worth a fair sum.
Sure I own a 54 jaguar mark 7, 52 nash statesman, 68 sport fury 3 and 65 merc seabreeze.
Sure I own a pretty fair selection of exotic animals.
etc. etc. etc.

But what business is that of the employee's, have they considered what I went through to get here? Did they ask me about the $270,000.00 loss I posted as a result of my first restaurant wiping out. Did they consider all of the long hours I have put in over the past 12 years of busting my butt to get to where I am.

For the sake of brevity I will cut short the personal side of my story to say this one thing.

Have care what you say about your boss an his personal affairs friend. And the very best way for you to get a raise is to go above an beyond the call of duty. The very best way for you to get your butt canned is to act or feel disgruntled at how good your boss has it and how far done by you feel because that will show through in very clear fashion.

1. It's an Import Shop. I do just about everything that could go on at said shop. Lately, I have to drive all over the city picking things up and dropping stuff off.

2. I worked there for a year and moved to another state due to family issues. Moved back 3 years ago, worked for him since.

3. My performance has been well beyond what is expected of me.
A few examples:
I'm early every day by at least 20 minutes. Others I work with are usually 20 minutes late. Guess who gets to pick up the slack?
When someone needs to stay late, I'm asked first, because I never say no.
There is more than one shop, if someone is off, sick etc at the other shop, guess who gets asked to go over there and help? Me, because I never say no. I don't want to do it, but I do anyway.
If it's very busy, I'm the only one who will skip lunch.

4. There are other options, but I cannot confirm whether they would pay more or less.

I think you've got me wrong. I don't care that he owns the things he does, he earned them. I'm well aware of that. I'm not passing judgment. I only listed it to illustrate my dilemma. He says he can't afford it, but his actions say otherwise.

FWIW, I'm not the only person who has asked for a raise and been told no. Every person I work with has the same complaints about it that I do.

In the end, it may no longer matter. He proposed some changes the other day that I simply will not do. I've got an interview at ATK next week. If they offer the position I'm taking it.

ah now here is where it comes to for my second point, I offer my staff medical and dental paid for by the company, they never pay for food even if off shift, I offer above industry standard wages and refuse to be a lazy bugger who is above them I work along side of them and prefer to say they work with me not for me.

I had to take the first approach just to see where yall were coming from. If it is indeed that you work for a person who does not see the clear point that it indeed his staff that has gotten him thus far to a point and he wont share somewhat the fruits of his labours then for sure see what else it out there.

I place a high value on my staff and make sure that they are not seen as peons that get a pittance and should be glad for it. I also make sure that if times are good good times are had.

perhaps this person will smell the coffee one day or perhaps he may not, in any rate if a better position presents itself go for it. It sounds to me that the person has allowed familiarity with the good graces of key employees to breed contempt for same employees a costly maneuver for sure.
