This is our hobby in a nutshell. People want what isn't available. And then don't when they are.

eh.. I can assure I wouldn’t want any of the above polled in any situation. And the piranha is illegal where I am. Even gars are and I continuously pass them up in lfs.. only illegal fish IMO worth having is the snakehead. Supply and demand is a pretty natural way of determining what people as a whole generally value.

I've taken part in this thread, and it's sister thread, "the most underrated fish". And thinking about it a little more I think it's unfair to call certain species out just because there's something about that particular species of fish that you've taken a dislike to, and then simply lump it with a title of "overrated". In my case, in this thread, I gave rays, arowanas and flowerhorns as my "overrated" fish, and get this, my choices are fish I haven't even kept!! Which, on reflection, made me feel a bit of a plonker!

Many hobbyists love rays, arowanas and flowerhorns, and quite rightly so. All of them in their own right, and justifiably so, play their part in our hobby. It's not really that I think they're overrated, it's more of a case that they just aren't my cup of tea, which is different.

I think it's important to get that across. It's not about underrated or overrated, it's simply down to different preferences and tastes.

ALL species, from mosquito fish right up to arapaima, deserve their place in our hobby.

Hello; Thanks. I still do not see where this is going exactly. Sort of sounds like a vehicle to perhaps put down those who like a fish you do not happen to care for. For example I do not want to keep plecos or the big cichlids any more. I think they are just as good types of fish as any I currently am interested in having. I do not expect others to like the types of fish I happen to favor.
I guess the thing is the fish I happen to like are not superior to the fish I do not happen to like. I have always wanted to keep a tank of Discus but, as you mention, do not have the water conditions they need. So I would rate them high as being desireable fish to have, but too difficult to keep properly for me.
This isn't putting the fish down of any sorts just which do people like more but in reality because of certain conditions the fish is harder to keep. If you feel a person saying this fish is more overrated or underrated than this fish so and so you should probably stray away from any threads like this. I have nothing else to say on the subject. kno4te kno4te

Hello, everyone in this thread. I've noticed that many people in this thread & a few people in a similar thread believes calling certain fish over or under rated as degrading that fish and putting lesser value on it's existence compared to other fish. This is not what I meant for this thread to be about and it's turning in that direction of ''Well all fish deserve a spot in the hobby'' and multiple people getting offended by this thread's presence. Therefore, I'll ask a moderator to lock the thread right away and hope this be a lesson to any who try to make a similar topic.

Hello; Let me be more clear. I was thinking this sort of "rating" of fish has more to do how the folks who keep the fish in question are looked at. I don't wish to keep plecos any more. A personal preference. Since it has been made clear this "rating" is not about how hard or easy it is to keep the fish, then I see no clear way to "rate" the fish without also rating in some way those who keep that fish.
This isn't putting the fish down of any sorts
Hello; Hence my point above. Any particular species or subspecies of fish has thru the trials of living evolved to fit into a niche. The fish is a result of doing it's thing in natural environments. I keep the ones I like with the acquired condition that they do well in my local water and tank size. Some I would like to have do not fit my conditions. The only way I rate a species is in the difficulty of keeping them.
Back to my Discus comments. I am not willing to go to the expense and trouble to try to give them the water conditions they need. I do admire those who take on the task. I have always enjoyed looking at most any Discus. A discus is harder to keep and harder to find than guppies so command a greater price and more work to keep well. Other than the extra work and expense, the discus fish keeper is on the same par as the guppy fish keeper in the sense of a rating for their fish.

As to having the thread closed. These threads take on a life of their own. It will fade on it's own in time. I have made my case about the rating of fish, but welcome a civil discussion on the subject. Too many areas of interest are already closed off for discussion. It seems to be established that the majority of us are not putting down the fish being rated for being what they are. Some have voted to rate the fish already. I will continue to follow this thread to see how it goes.
