I don't know about bettas high in demand. I think they are a bit underrated actually here in ny. I see at least 50 jars of bettas in every store and most of them not bought. Maybe because of their bad colors or such
Bettas are in very high demand. Several stores in my area order 100 each week, and go through them. Bettas can be very profitable, if you get the right genetic strains.

A couple of people mentioned Frontosas. There could be a little profit or just enough to break even and pay for food/electricity bills. Getting a nice large colony of 10-14 Wild Caught Mobas (or Zaires in general) could be costly but fry tend to carry a price of about $25-$35 ea. So, if successful you could pay for the colony in a few spawns (theoretically).

but it also takes many years to get fronts up to a breeding size!

a couple years ago i asked the same question. i dont mean to right a book im just giving my experience. my wife wanted to open a pet store so we jumped right in on that venture. with all the chain stores and the expensive price of the lease on the building we just had a hard time keeping up. long story short i had somewhere in the ballpark of 35k invested in tanks and equipment. that sounds like alot of money which it is but commercial tanks are very expensive. after a year in business i had to call it quits cause it kept gettin in my pocket. i built a 2500sf building and run about 6500 gallons of water in it. we do alot of wholesale and transhipping. and stock about 75% of the freshwater fish to 5 stores. i import alot but breed quite abit also. we have 19 different strains of discus. they are a big seller in our area. i can import them for about half price of what i can raise them for but the key is quality. its hard to sell junk. the reason ornamental fish bring big bucks is the quality. those kiddie pools that you buy at walmart are awesome and cheap for raising fish. theres money to be made but the hobby turns into a 7 day a week job. my wife runs 7 days a week and is on the phone 24/7. still shes not gettin rich just making a decent wage. moral of the story is just find a fish that you enjoy. keep the hobby simple. i would never discourage any1 from trying to make a living at it but its a tough raquet. the cost of shipping going through the roof internet sales are falling everyday. but to answer the question of the most profitable fish to breed i would have to give the blue ribbion to my kois. the are low maintence and breed like rabbits. not picky about water conditions either. the only problem is that they are seasonal. from early spring to the first of summer.

i'd say aro's and rays :D
