most underrated ca/sa cichlid?

I say Mayans. A lot of people mistakingly get them in their hunt for Festae. Then the people are bummed out about getting a Mayan (uro) instead of a Festae. They are the constant rejects in the Red Terror name class. But I have seen some very nice ones before that made me wonder if i should have kept one of my Mayan mistake buys. They reach a good size, aggressive, and are personable (at least mine were). They may not have the same coloration and symmetry of Festae but they are nice cichlids.

I think a lot of people are unsure of what underrated means.

I hardly think Oscars, Convicts or Green Terrors, being some of the most popular cichlids, could be underrated.

For me classing convicts as underated is due to the fact that IMO they are taken for granted, used as target fish to bond pairs of "more desireable" fish thier fry are commonly used as feeders and hardly ever kept as the centerpiece species in a display tank let alone in a species or bio-tope set up. Most convects are only kept because they are so easy to breed and give us and almost endless supply of feeders. That is why I said they are a victom of thier own success, and underated for the truly classic and amazing cichlids they really are.

I would agree on convicts for all those reasons. They're obviously not "underrated" in the sense that they're rare, or rarely kept, but they're often dismissed...and you see some fantastic looking adult cons, big beefy males, really pretty females.

JD's are in the same boat, they're incredibly common...but if normal jacks were at all rare people would be all over them. Fantastic looking fish, and all the ones I've kept have been compatible with peaceful SA's like festivums, sevs, juruparis etc as well as more aggressive fish.

Chocolate cichlid! I think an adult chocolate is a gorgeous fish.

I agree with the chocolate....
People pass them over when they are juvi's because they are so bland looking. When they get larger they are stunning fish with an oscar like personality.
I have one about 8" TL so far, and the mix of velvety greens/mustard/browns is awsome!!

Burt :)

Overrated: Convicts (Almost everyone has already kept these fish.)

Underrated: Uaru in my opinion. I dunno. I just find uarus rather elegant even if they look dull to others. Very personable too.

Ill agree with the chanchito and festivum.Hardly ever see them in stores and they are some of the best looking fish.Should never have sold all mine.
Same with JD,I rarely see them in stores and if anyone has ever kept an adult male you know how good looking they can be.
