Most Underrated Monster Fish???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Tin foil barb! Although if I could get my hands on a lemon like 12 Volt’s it probably would be that one.

oscars...

probably not many people buy them because they're cheap and aren't rare...the the rest are put in a 10g lol

Would also say tinfoils, not seen many people with large tinfoils, like mine :)

Oh, believe me, they are. If I ever talk about keeping goldfish people are like, "Goldfish? I thought you were more advanced." As if goldfish were some hurdle not to be looked back upon. Of course, all you have to do is ask them how old their goldfish is. Then ask why it died if it's so easy to raise them.
Plus, they are the essential "feeder" and "cheap prize" that seem so disposable to so many. I can't imagine a more underrated fish. It's the gap between how they are perceived in value and how cool they actually are once in a tank that I see here as the measure of "underrated-ness". Differing definitions of "underrated" will lead to different fish being selected, I suppose.

I very much agree with you. Goldfish are so mistreated being seen as an easy child's toy/pet that you can stick in a tiny bowl.

But, I think if anything is abused and under appreciated, its got to be the common pleco. People most often do not buy them as an interesting fish to own, but in the false hope that they will make good vacuum cleaners for their 10 gallon tanks. They are an after thought even when bought. Then they get too big and people dump them, either to anyone who will take them or in a local body of water.
The giant common pleco I caught in Florida with a big net. The ballsy pleco sat and fought with me over his territory. (Yes, I have these pics up elsewhere).

I wanted so much to bring this guy home. :)

Yeah. I'd have stuck that guy in my suitcase and gone right home. Pretty guy. And, yeah, plecos have a really bad life story in the aquarium world. Very sad. It's funny that the algae they eat does a better job of waste management than they do. :(

i agree with tinfoils, not many people even give them a second look. oscars are a possibility but working in a store you soon learn if there's a fish ppl will ask about it will be oscars or piranhas, everyone knows those two

I'd have found me a bucket and plopped him in my pond. it currently houses a 16" and a 13" common pleco.
