Your male looks like a rio blanco variety (I'm on my phone though) and should be a stunner once 12". Your female is a beauty to. Maybe try the divider for a while once they get bigger and less likely to find a way around. Hopefully the male will come around and will get out of kill mode. It really sucks though because you almost need a full time divider that only the female can fit thru in order to keep a pair. Not exactly the prettiest thing to look at.

Thanks for the comments.... I have made some changes regarding the male mota. 2 days ago i noticed the him hitting the divider hard in the 75 at the Texas cichlid on the other side... And IMO...the divider was giving the mota an exaggerated sense of himself as he kept hitting it without the Tex being able to physically engage him, thus enabling the mota to assume he was successfully standing up to a fish much larger.Egg crate dividers are a great tool but as you allude to not very aesthetic... The other problem is an aggressive fish can tear their lips up if they keep attacking through the divider... which my mota definitely was..did not want to risk him getting any disease from scraping his mouth up so as I was planning to move him to my 150 at some point anyway... I decided it was time,.. it's also a divided tank, but i have a plexi glass divider, which is not as noticeable and it is covered with some algae growth to block the view of each other ..my 150 gallon has some of my most outgoing fish, a female jag and a male Texas jag hybrid...The tank is our family room and has the most traffic... I hope to be able to expand on the already outgoing nature of the mota .( has already acclimated very well) Prior to all this I was already thinking about putting the male and female mota in there by themselves with a divider, or provide some more hiding spots, PVC etc... At this point she needs a lot more time to heal before I can consider doing that.... Here are some pics of the male....

It seems as though most of the Parachromis motaguense "Red Tiger" are coming from the Rio Blanco stock. There are motaguense that are not "Red Tiger" as well. I don't know where that variant comes from though and I suspect there are a few floating around here.

Thanks...and i completely agree that the standard and effective way to get a compatible pair is to get five or six juveniles and let them pair off naturally then remove the rest... hopefully before any get killed.... Initially when I saw them all I was trying to do was get a nice male... Then on second thought i went back a week later and got two more to make sure I got my male and to get a possible female .. they were a bit pricey (didn't want to spend almost $100 for a 6 ).. but it was mainly space limitations.,so I only got two more ... I know now for sure with this species to get a pair one has to raise the right number of these guys in a large (125 and up) tank with other grow outs or monitor in a divided tank better than I did thus far....clearly in a 75 with nothing else to disperse aggression a dominant one claims it and makes life miserable for the rest... on the positive note the female is still alive so there is hope and the male is turning to be at excellent wet pet....

I agree as well. I bought 8 mota juvies and put them in a 75 hoping to get a pair, but one always takes over and almost kills the rest or doesn't allow them to eat. I have had to divide them or split them in different tanks, but no matter what one always takes over. Maybe it will take a bigger tank to grow juvies out and pair em off.

Has anyone had luck getting a pair of grow out motas in a 75?

Thanks... I have seen a few vids on youtube with different pairs in what look to be 75 gallon tanks...i get the feeling that it was some trial and error involved.... At least in some of the vids you might hear mentioned that's it's not the first female the male being paired with.....

I grew out 6 in a 55 about 10yrs ago. I had rocks and driftwood everywhere it worked pretty good. I had to put a couple in timeout then reintroduce, but I'll say it worked out until I got my pair. I have the most problems with domestic violence. Unless the female is good bit smaller it's hard to keep her out of harms way.

Update.... I have good news bad news good news.... First good news is that the female did pull through from that horrific beating and terrible fungal infection.... Bad news is that it left her disfigured.... She is eating and behaving in a normal manner but has a deformed midsection now... Which has me doubtful that she will ever be able to produce eggs and spawn.... however the other good news is that my Lfs recently got some more Rtm's... They came down a little bit in price
($11.99 down from $15.99 each)... But again I wasn't so sure about getting a small group because now I don't want another possible male and also due to my limited tank space and amount I wanted to spend...so for now I only got one... although is only around under 2 inches it looks feminine... Let's see if I can get lucky again in at least getting the proper sex.... whenever I'm able to bring this one together with the male(provided it is a female) it will definitely fit Reaper 13 philosophy of the female being a bit smaller.... And the male which is my 150 gallon is looking fantastic....
