Moved a 14" gar and hasn't eaten in 5 days

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I thought there was no reason to add tankmates this early to an already stressed fish, plus he still hasn't done the ''starving period" and wants to attempt feeding again so soon. Frequent feeding attempts for a fish that won't eat is likely to make it LONGER before it finally does eat than itt normally would if he stopped offering food for say, a week. OP isn't listening to anything we say, one last chance and i'm done with this thread
Frank, you aren't telling him what he wants to hear.

Take it easy guys I do listen to everything you say, I have already changed what im feeding my fish because of this thread. He will not be attacking any tank mates cause he is the smallest fish in the tank. He is very active and does not look stressed at all. he has had plenty of times to eat, he just doesn't appear to want to eat, thats the only thing off about him, the 2 other tank mates who I just moved yesterday already ate, and its not like they eat everything and he has nothing, live goldfish and thawed silver sides have been within an inch of his mouth everyday and he has not acted. Please don't think im some know it all thats too good to take your advice, i greatly appreciate this site and all the info I get

you're STILL not listening.

Stop..........offering........food.................for several days. Nothing. Do not give him the choice of eating and he will get hungry and eat much quicker when he doesn't have the OPTION.

You're making your job twice as difficult. Just stop trying to feed him for several days.

He is stressed. You can't "SEE" stress in an animal. He is not eating...................because he is stressed from the move. Adding more fish before he was acclimated to his new tank stressed him more.

This is my last post, you're on your own now. I'm tired of wasting my time if you're not going to listen

I agree with some and respectfully hold a different opinion on other things brought up by Frank.

The gar indeed may still be stressed from the fall and the move but I don't know if it has already adjusted and now not eating because he is waiting for his usual live cuisine. IMHO, it'd be impossible to tell.

While it is possible for a tankmate to stress a fish already under stress, it is also quite possible for a newcomer to de-stress a fish (dither effect) or to have no effect, esp. if there is no particular interaction.

I personally do not see any harm in offering the non-live foods daily. It's just too much work for the keeper that may be unnecessary but I don't think it would affect the chances of the gar to take the new foods sooner or later. But if you have made observations to the opposite, Frank, that's quite fine too. We are all here to learn.

I think that Bobby is on the right track more or less. Time's on his side. He needs patience, work, and a bit of luck.

Thank you for the post Viktor I feel the same way you do, when he is hungry enough he will eat, he is not floating sideways or acting non normal that would concern me more. Today he went right up to the thawed silverside and looked very close to eating him but did not but thats more then he has done as of now.

Plus his tankmates have been with him for a couple years and my friend who I got them from suggested he may be lonely cause he enjoys his tankmates. I am holding off adding the other tank mates until they are all happy
