the oscars gonna outgrow the tank, so get rid of him before he grows much larger, as when they get larger, no one buys them, so u just see them in the pet stores as trade ins and its quite sad. a two inch oscar will sell much better then a six.
also the one inch per gallon isnt always true, so you should get rid of him asap as i grew mine from 2.5 to nine in 3 and a half months, but i kept him well feed.

True, but then little kids buy the 2" oscar and it then again winds up in a 29G.

A 6" oscar looks more impressive thus sells better. It really depends. Wether you have beginner customers or customers with deep pockets.

And deep tanks.

...actually a valid point, although if thier any larger i just see them sit in the store, the lfs has 4 in one huge tank all for sale, all havent moved in months.
i guess, i must be one of few that likes to raise them from babies then.

:WHOA: I want to see how this plays out.

You could, realistically, only have a pair of Firemouths in a 29g. An Oscar, 3 FMs, and a JD in a 29 is like a Pima in a 55g.

Here's just a little tip, you may find it to be true, or you may not. But here goes... I can say with confidence that you will enjoy a single pair or even a single fish, that is very well cared for, in a tank that is too large for it than you will enjoy a bunch of fish in a tank that is too small, that will be the source of much stress and hassle on your part, and an unhealthy (regardless of how nice the water is), stressful, and probably sickness-ridden life for the fish. I would highly highly suggest either:
1) Getting a much bigger tank.
2) Get rid of everything except 2 FMs (a confirmed M/F Pair)
3) Get rid of everything, and get a nice group of small fish, and start a beautiful planted tank.

I think these would be the best options for you, and especially for the fish. I think most people enjoy a couple well kept for fish than many fish that aren't well housed.
:iagree:

I'd go with dwarf cichlids like apistogramma etc as mentioned in another part of the thread. I have a FM and wouldn't dream of stuffing him in my 29-30 gallon (36x12x 16?) much less a pair, but thats strictly my opinion.

My 30 is set up with German Blue Rams and these guys are right. They don't have the size but definitely make up for it in coloration and personality. A real joy to watch.

Good Luck!
