Took my custom built 500 gal a forklift-Dollies and removing walls-There was no lifting it-period....

Hopefully you have better luck...

wow that's dedication there.

I seriously doubt you getting it down stairs.. not trying to discourage you but hell, I have a 300 glass and I would under no curcuimstances but at gunpoint try to lift something like a 500 (glass thickness and all that) that down a flight of stairs.. I had 6 pretty well built guys and no matter how you do it or how much testosteron is involved you will sooner or later come to that point where someones finger/foot will slip, after all its just glass . another factor is the floor. concrete will o so easily rub off a corner at the slightest touch if you were forced to put it down.

I just came up with the easiest way of all!!!!!!

Are there any custom tank builders in your vicinity?

If so why not ask them if they can dissasemble the tank and then remake it in your basement? issue solved and you have a fresh and solid seal on the tank. bit more hassle but sure deal.

I agree here. I am in the process of moving my 500G. I took it apart because it wouldn't fit through the door.

Or, call a mover. That thing will be heavy.

refrigeratior dolly with 3 rotating wheels per side. dunno about the op's location didn't check but you can rent them from uhaul, penske, enterprize etc.

then 3-5guys could move it down stairs 2 below one above. or 2 above and 3 below. the amount of guys will of course depend on the size of the guys.

3 large samoans would do it. pity you can't find them on every corner like a certain other nationality in the southwest.

IMO, it would take more than 5 people.

well we moved a 450lb fridge downstairs with this method with 2 people. double the wieght I'd think 5 would be okay, unless they were in the weight class of 7 year olds. lol

the weight distribution is handled by the 3 rotating wheels greatly reducing the pressure on the guy(s) on the bottom.

there are also other options depending on wheher or not awindow is adjacent the basement stairs in which case you could use a truck and a winch outside and slowly lower the tank to the basement. you would of course need a few pullys for any turns involved. mounting them to studs should work.

idk I'd have to see the place and and tank to amke a full determination.

edit: these are dolly's desingned for this type fo work. http://www.powermate.info/
but different from the one we used. if you've ever seen Hannibal the dolly he uses has 3 wheels per edge and rotates them via a motor, that's the kind we used.

:WHOA: That motorized handcart is amazing.Would have loved that when I used to move 200-800lb woodworking machinery into basements all the time.Usually by myself(up to 400lbs) sometimes(over 400) with one helper.
Its the glass that scares me going downstairs with these big tanks. Its one thing to get smashed, but smashed and shredded!Yikes.
The weight I could rig it so 3 guys could do it.Down is easy, gravity is working for you.;)
Put 2 125g tanks in my basement by myself,no strain and minimal lifting.
Its all about careful planning.
