Moving a 20" PACU...suggestions?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I am moving a 20" PACU aprox. 25 miles to his new Home. All the decor from the tank has been removed. He is in perfect health. So far I have:

large lawn trash bags
20 gallon Rubbermaid tote
Oxygen bottle with regulator
Power head
and crossed fingers

Any and all tips and tricks would greatly be appreciated...Thanx ~Z:thumbsup:
sounds like you got it pretty well under control.Ive seen people use smaller fishing nets to scoop them out.Ive got a 12in pacu right now very strong fish,GOOD LUCK.....

Best of luck on moving him. Pacus are powerful fish! Get someone to take pics or a video through the whole process. That would be intersting to see.

 If your plastic bag idea gets a hole in it (soon as he figures out its tight in here) expect an explosion. I hope there is no carpet envolved. You might try a washed burlap tight knit bag. From a feed store. Make sure its washes. you never know where they have been. We used this to move game fish from pond to tank. Never tried it on tropicals. But the burlap keeps them moist and does not hold water. Tight knit so fins won't extend through the material. Can anybody think of a reason why this wouldn't work. Then put it in the tub.

I'm hoping not to have to "net" him twice...It might take me awhile to herd him into the open plastic bag I'll have inplace inside the current tank, but the less handling of this
][\/][onster the better I think...God he's gonna be pissed :screwy:

Lower the water so that it's as high as the height of the fish, then do whatever you need to scope him in the bag.

By lowering the water, he can't jump much higher than the 3/4 of the tank.

i would suggest a bigger than 20 gallon rubbermaid that is gonna be a pretty tall fish and you are gonna need to cover it completely with water... when i move my big fish i use ratchet straps around the rubbermaids or coolers depending on what i am using so that there is no way of popping the top off and bring alot of towels he is gonna splash ya probally or he might be calm but i think he will splash... the 19" channel cat i just got soaked me and splashed people that were 15' across the room

why dont you use clove oil? Knocks him out so its easier to then put him in the 20 gallon rubber maid?

good luck with the move :)
