Moving Armatus to a new tank advice

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You've obviously never seen a fish shoot through the side of a bag. Had a Jar that went right through the bag and smack the wall 2 foot away. Barbells never grew back.

I've had more then 1 shoot right through a rubber net (Dorado and Clown knife). You couldn't pay me to use a bag to move a fish I didn't like.

This is obviously a prized fish, do it a solid and go get a nice net or better yet 2 so you don't have to worry about it impaling your hand when you have to prevent it from flopping out of the net mid move.

Thanks man very much.

Why is the growth rate slowing down? I thought they grow fast until they reach the 2 feet.

no way, armatus drastically slow down their growth when they hit 12 or so inches. if they were to have a big growth rate, they will hit 2 feet in around 2 years or less. the 2 footers+ are usually a bit older than that. From 1-12 inches their growth rate is around 1-2 inches a month. After 12 inches, it slows down to .5 or less inches a month. Didn't you get yours when it was already 12+ inches?

Low the water until the top of fin and tail stick out of water. At least, completely remove the lids on one opening of your tank, and all those decoration, light fixture and any loose stuff on top of the tank. Get a big, deep net, and one same size or smaller net. Net the beast with your big net, place the other net on top, and hold both nets together with BOTH hands as close to the ring of the nets as possible. Make sure both nets are secure and you have a firm grip before you lift the beast out of water. Dip both nets in the new tank as deep as possible before you release the beast. Move the nets out of the tank in a way that they're above and cover the beast to prevent it jump out. Place lids on top as soon as possible. NO RUSHING, NO RUNNING! Mission accomplished! :D

no way, armatus drastically slow down their growth when they hit 12 or so inches. if they were to have massive growth rate, they will hit 2 feet in around 2 years or less. the 2 footers+ are usually twice as old as that. From 1-12 inches their growth rate is around 1-2 inches a month. After 12 inches, it slows down to .5 or less inches a month. Didn't you get yours when it was already 12+ inches?
Actually, Armatus does hit 2ft in 2 years. It hits 16"-18" in a year

Obviously only you and I so far are the two in this thread who have moved big fish. Bags, plastic tub... :screwy:

Burned by JL again! In the wild, 100%. Anything is possible for a monster fish but I doubt most keepers has a massive tank to start with for it to explode in size. most of these fish hop from growout to growout. Mine is around 10 months old and it's roughly 10 inches.

How do you transport it then? didn't you get your fish from plastic tubs from the Death Row?

I have to get a new net after a Dorado ripped right through it, pretty sure the big Clown Knife found the same hole and just ripped it even worse. But I know we're spot on with the clam shell netting method (using 2 nets) :)

Sounds like we're also the only ones that understand the growth potential of Armatus..... Mine never grew quite as fast as you mentioned but I also raised them in little tanks and had nothing bigger then a 180 at the time. I'll keep better tabs on growth this time, and have some room for them to stretch out. ;)
