Moving Armatus to a new tank advice

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
How far away is the new tank? A short trip, short catch time, and least amount of struggle are key.

Small scales are gonna go flying so you want to be gentle but effective at the same time. If he starts struggling alot and things arent going very smooth i would stop, wait a little and try again later

A very stressful catch may be all it takes for a big guy like this to turn for the worst imo

When I have to take my fish out, I get a huge clear bag that fish farms use to transport fish and put it into the tank. It generally doesn't take long for the fish to swim into the bag. Once they're in it, I let some water out of the back so I can pick it up and then I move the fish. Doing it this way might scare the fish but it won't damage them.

If I had to do this with a very large fish, I'd lift the clear bag with a fishing net so that even if the fish pops the bag, I wouldn't drop him.

I like this idea with the bag thanks Rob!

careful not to get 'fanged' by it. :D
I think the bag method is good. have to see the individual temperament of the fish. normally in my case with arowanas, I use the bag method and a net to just nudge the fish gently into the bag, others I use a fish tranquilizer like Transmore if the fish gets too difficult on me. :D
I can't say for a 18" armatus, since mine now only hitting 6".

Might look into this Transmore thanks man!

When i moved my armatus, i lower my tank water to 25% so the armatus wouldn't have alot of space to struggle. Get a big net and scoop and dump.

I am nervous since sometimes when I do water changes he starts getting restless at 60%.

Trev the tank is actually right next to him. I am gonna do it as fast as possible. Thanks for your message!

My LFS bro mentioned I get a huge 3mm bag for lawn leaves from Home Depot and line half the tank with it, then slowly grab him that way?

Looking into a huge bag from LFS. They only carry 24" wide ones.

I've moved my current and past armies a few times and each time they all went on about a two week fast...It's like they get themselves so worked up they are too pissed off to eat lol....It will be interesting to see if yours reacts in a similar way.

get a drink cooler. Or a tupperware tub (20-30 gals). They're way better.

I never had luck getting fish into big tubs. They always seem to hard to move around

my armatus is very giddy too. but for some reason that moving day, I managed to scoop it out with an undersized net with no problem at all. The tubs are good since the fish can clearly see a background color so they don't bump on the sides. I think 25% water left is key. Experience may vary of course. My fish gets nervous during WC but once there is no water to swim around into, it'll just calm down.

Lix,about how big is your armie now?

You've obviously never seen a fish shoot through the side of a bag. Had a Jar that went right through the bag and smack the wall 2 foot away. Barbells never grew back.

I've had more then 1 shoot right through a rubber net (Dorado and Clown knife). You couldn't pay me to use a bag to move a fish I didn't like.

This is obviously a prized fish, do it a solid and go get a nice net or better yet 2 so you don't have to worry about it impaling your hand when you have to prevent it from flopping out of the net mid move.
