Moving Bed Filter

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The youtube videos show it to be popular with KOI farmers. Looks interesting though.....post some progress when you get it running.

Don't be so quick to put so much credibility in "big million dollar projects". I have built revolutionary multimillion dollar water treatment plants. You would be surprised how much "baffle" there is and how much "dazzle" there isn't.

I haven’t given all credibility to the fact that there are big million dollar projects running this system.
I would put it down to the fact I have been seeing these filters running on system with big money at stake all over the place. Like Koi ponds with some koi worth up to $20,000USD each all over Asia & Ray breeders using the same system with their very expensive rays. Seems to be working fine for them.

...why is this system "bull schmidt" :D
I didn't say that. You are putting words into my mouth.

Let's do it this way: Explain in your own words why you think this system is far superior to anything else. Use a fluidized bed filter and a wet sump as examples for comparison. Explain how this system works and what it does that a FBF and wet sump doesn't.

aeri- I meant something made of plastic that floats for the moving media as this might help with actually moving it. Once waterlogged sponges might become a heavier and thus slower moving.

Just my 2c really. Wanna see how this thred develops especially with the new questions and remarks as I might add a custom external MBF to my setup.

LOL who said it is far superior to anything else :wall:
my posts have been pointed to you & Ullopin questioning the efficiency of this system. I have just stated that it must work for so many people to be using it.

Just as far as surface area alone, it doesn't look as efficient as a Fluid bed with sand, or bead filter. One benefit might be that the lighter media allows a smaller pump.

I would suggest just using that area for chemical media (if you use it) and, if you want to, a powerhead for a FBF with sand.

You would need to use a different media... Check out the pond section here and on some other sites for more info on these. The kaldness (sp?) media is generally the only kind used.

What is that foam at the beginning (original post) and where can I get some?

true. the sponges due to its weight might have trouble sinking back down. kaldness i could not find around here, most the LFS i've been to don't know of it either. i'm up to suggestions on what other cheap makeshift media i could use... i've considered sand, but i'm afraid it may pour into the next chamber and make a mess.

i don't normally use any chemical media.

the foam in the beginning is open-cell foam. there's a billion different names for it. you can pick them up at LFS for like 30x cost.

You wouldn't actually have sand in that chamber, but a fluidized bed filter.
