Moving my fish tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
that could be an issue. Food safe, FDA approved, 50g tanks can be expensive AFAIK...what about a bunch of plastic bags sealed off inside boxes? seems sorta wasteful BUT keeping some of that water might be one of the most important aspects to your move.

Your local grocery store might have 10L jugs for water dispensers...the deposit on them is normally 5$, then just return them for your deposit.

Haha Id like to see you roll a 400+lb 50gal barrel filled with fish into the back of a car.

20gal totes are your best/cheapest method. If you put the lid on a rubbermaid totes IT WILL NOT LEAK. I've done it a few times. They are like $7 at wal-mart.

Take your fish and filters first, get them to the new house and get them running in the totes. This will prevent alot of the good stuff in the water and filters from dieing. And your fish wont be in stagnant water for 4 hours while your running around.

Not sure how big your fish are, but I have had a lot of luck with 5 gallon buckets. I just covered the top with plastic (of course clean it first) and tape it tight like a drum. A few 5 gallon buckets helps you move your fish, many gallons of your water and wont break your back. Just my .02
Never lost a fish from a move.
Good luck!

Matt

Oh, and when carrying your tank (if totally empty) flip it upside down so you can grip it with your fingers inside the tank. Makes a world of difference IME.

5 gallon buckets wont work but i do have a 33 gallon brute trash can with locking lid for my fish. Thanks for the idea about the 10 gallon water jug that is what i'm probably going to do. If i do get some 50 gallon drums thats what i got friends for lol. Have had to move the tank 3 times now just up the road and got friends to help lol. Hopefully everything will go smoothly Ill keep you all updated when ever i get my car back to move it. Thank you every one :D

Some stores dont sell them with any kind of lid but if you cover it with plastic wrap and elastics i assume it would work, its such a small hole at the top you'd need to hit a pretty big bump.
