well sad to say my life hit rock bottom
that said, looks like my fish have to go :(

tank-240g 8'
silver aro 30" or so
natural pond,not sure on size

few questions

whats the lowest temp a 30" silver can handle?

whats the best way to aclimate him to a natural pond?

should i drug him to move him?
and with what?
anything better then clove oil?

anything else i should do for the move?

this move is freaking me out the most of all my fish :irked:

My arapaimas and RTCs are currently surviving in 20-22 degree water (winter over here). Seeing that both are amazonian fishes, silver should be the same i think. Do note that at lower temperature they are less resistant to infections etc. How cold does it get over at your place? NEed to feed less in cooler weather

When i moved my 25"+ paimas, i did not use anything to calm them. Just lower the water level then scoop them into a plastic container. You can then float the cooler afterwards. (this is the same method i used to move my marble pims).

How cold does it get in your area ? if I were you, I'd start to take a chart on water temp at the pond during the morning, day and night.
Once you have your pond temp and the air temp, you can pretty much figure out the temp difference between air temp and water temp.

Then, try to lower your tank temp to the pond temp SLOWLY...and see how your aro is doing. This is a good way for him to get used to it as well. Anything to reduce stress is the key for a succesful move.

They can handle pretty low temp....but again you live in FL so it shouldn't be a problem.

As far as catching them, use a pillow case or an old bed sheet (twin size). This way you're minimizing scale damage.

Get the water low enough and have a buddy to get thhe aro into the sheet.

thanks for the replies

temp here gets down in the upper 20's for just a few days a year
but thats the worst, normal cold weather is maybe the 30's
but when its cold the pond steams
and the cold usually doesnt last

not sure on pond temp, its hard to keep track cus the weather changes so much and its not to cold right now

sheet is a good idea
i used the pillow case trick back when he was 20" but now at 30" its a bit different

oh and over a year ago i put 3-12" peacock bass in the pond and they are still surviving
but they go deep,i dont know if an aro will

Not sure on aro but my pacu, RTCxTSN, silver dollars and midas have done fine with the water temp going down to the mid 60's.

aros are really sensitive to water tempratures...do a research on how much the min tem is..if its around 72 then its not bad at all...

i'd say minimum 19-20 degrees CELCIUS.
how far is the pond?
if its not far then i'd say just net him and put him in a bag like how you transport fish home from the lfs.

Moving 30" long monster is not a joke.:nilly:

I wonder if you can move him in a plastic bag. I guess you would need big drum or something to relocate him to the pond.
