Moving over seas with fish and turtles?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Honestly probably my best option. With $10,000 I surely can afford a 180 over there =3. My problem is the shipping. I can proabbly get my Fiancee to stay here and take care of them while I get stuff settled there and then take them to some body to ship, Possibly an MFKer?

Sounds like a good plan. Are you doing your basic in san antonio?

Nothing is cheap in Japan... Especially realestate so finding a place where you can store a large tank may be tricky depending on where you're moving to

On base Housing is just like standard Western living, In size and every thing. Problem is it looks like I can't have Reptiles, Don't know if they are just generalizing all herps such as lizards and snakes etc. Or if they mean Turtles too. I'm gonna talk to my recruiter and talk to the Yakota Air Force base. I'd love to see this happen but my turtles are too precious to me to give up.

on most Air Force installations they have a small maximum for tank size but do infact allow certain "tanked" animals.. Im not sure on the specifics but there is a max which im assuming is around 55 gallons for base housing... now the dorms are a whole other story. You would have to talk to the dorm managers about the specifics there..

Not sure if your recruiter told you but just in case you didn't know the 10k signing bonus will not be given to you unless you complete your Tech school which for linguist is right around the 2 year mark. Then after you get your AFSC badge they give you half of the signing bonus upfront and the other half over the course of your enlistment, which is you signed for 4 years would be the remainining 2. and on top of that crypto linguists fail rate is upwards of 90%...

Good luck with which ever job you chose though!

Have you ever thought about the Air National Guard? I first planned to go active duty but I then thought about college and how badly you need it in today's world, and active pay is not all that great. So I went to ny local guard base and joined and received a $20,000 bonus for joining. I also got paid a lot while at boot camp and tech school. They pared me for my month of training when I got back and for travel and housing which was a lot of money. I have currently been in about a year and a half and I am going to college for FREE. And on top of full tuition paid for the national Guard pays me a GI Bill and GI kicker both at $350 a month. So I have an extra 700 dollars a month to pay for my apartment rent. And on top of that I am pared another $200 a month for my drill. So you work one weekend a month. It is the best choice I have ever made and is so much fun. And the great part is that i can go to active duty wherever I want and whenever a position is open, which is often.

yea really the only kicker about active duty are the benefits, BAH, BAS and deployment pay. Not having to pay for anything but my own personal bills and not having to worry about how im going to afford medical bills and dental bills if my family gets injured is HUGE plus.

What Jason was being paid while he was on orders to do training and tech school was just active duty pay. Every time you deploy with the guard or go do training you get activated to active duty for that specific duty and then "deactivated" after and put back on guard status.

Honestly it all depends on what you want to do.. If your looking to travel and get out of the country which going to japan sounds like just that active duty i would assume would appeal to you more than going Guard. But if staying in the states and going to school as a full time student and working one weekend a month is your goal then Guard is the way to go.

But i would try to talk to someone who knows about that stuff a little better. The Post 9/11 GI bill (when you get out) does pay you 1200$ a month if you become a full time student after your enlistment is over.

either way its really just up to what you are looking to do. but neither is a bad choice IMO

Nexxus makes a great point on his past 2 comments. Linguist is VERY difficult and you wont see money for a long time. And active is more traveling for sure. But here at the Air National Guard you can volunteer and go a lot of places some beautiful and some not. We go 3 times a year for 2 months at a time. But individually you go once every 2 YEARS for 1 to 2 months.... Unless you volunteer to go more.

Either way you go guard, reserve, or active you will be living nice if you go with the AF. I should know I was in the army. :)

why would you join military at a time like this? that's crazy. i had a chance to work as a civilian on US base in Azores. i've turned it down. at this point it would be like working for satan.
