Moving with tanks

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have the API master test kit. Are there any test kits that detect chlorine? Just so I can be positive it’s good ? I’m gonna contact the water dept. tomorrow and see if they treat with both chlorine and Chloramine or if they just use one or the other. So treat the water before adding it correct? What if I’m using a python off a sink to fill up the tanks ? Would it be okay to add the water to the tank and then treat it or treat first then add water(during water changes) or will that short exposure time to the chlorine cause adverse affects to my fish. I prefer to use the python instead of making a mess walking back and forth with 5g buckets from the shower haha

When I do water changes, I add about half the water back and treat it. I let it sit for just a few minutes. Then do the other half and treat with Prime. I also keep the filter off so chlorine doesn't get to my bacteria.

I’ll definitely keep the filters off, I turn the whole tank off except for the light when I’m doing maintenance anyways but that makes sense about the chlorine getting to the BB in the filters

what types of fish are you moving?

You should have the 125g waiting for your arrival, with treated and heated water. You don’t want to shock your fish by adding them to cold water—unless they are cold water fish.

too little info like what type of filter, the distance of transport, etc but this is what i will do

1) stop feeding fish 2 days before then put fish in bucket with air stone.
2) empty tank water and disconnect all filters in morning, if canister filter, i just leave the water in canister
3) move empty tank and filter to new house
4) fill tank with water, add anti chlorine and connect and on filter.
5) same day or next day go back old house, transport fish in bucket with portable oxygen pump
6) acclimatize fish and good to go

for water change, i usually just drain water, use hose and fill water direct from tap , while it is being filled up, i put my anti chlorine. usually within a few mins. filter remains on.

I just got home from the place I’m moving to. I set up the 125g and have it filled with water and I added one 25 pound bag of new gravel to it. I left it at that. Now I gotta move forward with this, I’m using all of the gravel out of my 90g which is already cycled obviously but I needed one more bag to make up the difference in length between the 2 tanks. Should I move all my gravel next to the new tank and leave the fish in the 90g with no gravel until I’m ready to completely move out and move the fish? I’m most likely going to be out 95% by the 1st of the month
