Multiple MBU?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've seen a video of a Fahaka that was easily just as big as a full grown MBU. I think it might have bee posted on the puffer forum if I'm not mistaken. So why wouldn't it be possible for a MBU to reach over 30 inches? I'm no expert that's for sure but I can def. see in some cases a MBU reaching 30+ inches in prime conditions.

Absolutely inappropriate.

No. Statements like this (bolded) detract from any point you were making. It's clearly not accurate. A fahaka does not reach 26.4"

People like me messing with ray breeding are used to heavy bioload requirements. Our success at breeding rays would lead me to believe we must be doing something right. Drip systems that push new water continuously through a system coupled with heavily planted sumps, and bio reactors capable of severasl lbs of food per day aren't going to have a lot to worry about in terms of water quality.

Not really concerned with tank siize at this time as there's plenty of tanks here allowing upgrades as necassary. If they outgrow a 750 great..... I have no problem building them something "big"......

I started this thread to see if anyone has had success with a group of them. Just wanted to know if anyone's had 3-4 living together and all of a sudden chaos.....

I've kept several groups of predatory Characins. With them success in keeping several of the same species together comes with #s. The more there are the better the chances aggression is dispersed evenly.... I wasn't sure if MBUs carry similar traits in terms of mixing several in the same tank. Right now it seems to me they really enjoy being kept in groups..... Kinda like rays. :)

Considering how few people bother to house a singleton correctly, I don't think you're going to find many who house multiples successfully.

So is anyone with me in thinking there is a chance for success keeping a few together?

The housing of the adults will be intresting.... I started big with my rays but ended up shrinking thier pond several times in order to get them to breed

I just wanted something to keep with my rays, I thought what better creature then puffers.... I tried predatory Characin s but they seem to kill everything you try to house with them and thier personalities well needless to say I don't think they compare to a puffers'.

I hope to have my own house by the time these guys are ready for something bigger then the 750. Considering I'll be housing several adult rays with them the end system will be big.... I figure once I own a house then I'll be able to build a tank. I won't be building anything that "might" be big enough.

DB junkie
i agree with clay
about tank size..
when i went to indonesia
i saw a person with 6 thats right 6 MBU and 2 fahaka along with lots of dithers.
His tank was 8x4x3
Filtration was some Chinese canister and a overtop sump with a approx 1000GPH pump.
the mbus were 24 inches with tail.. without tail around 16
he fed them everyother day and the water was crystal clear..
and i for one believe that nothing can be more delicate then a ray.

THANK YOU! This was the little shiney glitter of hope I was looking for.

My tank isn't 3' tall (only 2.5') but the footprint is 10x4.

So.... Sounds like growout will work.
Footprint- check (10x4)
Filtration- check (huge wet dry, bio reactor, plant fuge, drip)
Dithers- check (Tor, Tinfoils, and likely others)

The thought of 3-4 MBU and a small shoal of Tor over top the nicest Marbles I could track down

Now... If only the Dorado will play nice with the MBU... :naughty:

OK well here is a Fahaka that is 20+ inches which is as big as a MBU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-QpCnnKMpQ I will look for the other video but can't seem to find it right now. Nice try tho

I'd have to see measurements to believe this 20+"s. That puffer looks no bigger then the span from the guys hand to elbow.
