Multiple MBU?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
also, this was about the MINIMUM tank size...anytime you have a an opportunity to go larger, it is always better for the fish. I did NOT change my mind on that aspect of which I did state.

Again I didn't ask what the minimum tanb size for life was. I'm not prepared to argue that when my puffers are barely an inch.

You know what? If I'm gonna get this 2500-3000 gallon crap just close the thread.

There's no way anyone is going to convince me a fish that seldom hits 30" needs a tank that big. After plenty of reasearch I've come to the conclusion that a 10X4 is a big enough to house Marble Motoros for life. So that is what I got. Now you people are telling me that puffers need 4 FOLD the room a ray who's disk will likely hit 2' is gonna need?

If it's a water quality gripe that's the reason for the ludacris tank size then throw that out the window. I breed rays. I don't pull the typical 25% a week waterchange. I've had waterbills above 13K gallons/month.

They outgrow the 750 then I'll upgrade.....

So has anyone kept a small group or just a pair?

DB, I think you'll find A LOT of misinformation about mbus. So many people lay claim to 1k gallons without any substantial reasons why. It's a big fish, for sure, but according to fishbase, it's a 26.4" fish. Nowhere near the 3' claims that are so common. You'll find this thread to be of some interest, I think. There are so many examples of the regurgitated 3rd hand info (at best) and demanding 1000g minimums. However, I post some examples of much smaller tanks.

Hope that thread helps sort a bit of opinion vs scientific fact.

I have mbu right now hes by himself but i think he's as big as hes going to get. I have had him for a couple of years right now is just about 2ft. Hes in a 400gallon tank and seems find to me.

Good question, I've wondered about this myself, would be cool to have a group of Mbu. I'm hoping someone with first hand experience...good or bad chimes in.

I've noticed there seems to be a group of people that seem to think their puffers need ridiculous amounts of room, a 24" Mbu is almost half tail...300 gallon is fine for life for one.

It also needs to be taken into consideration that puffers are generally more sensitive to water quality. Additionally, I've seen a Mbu that was at least 30 inches long, they get huge but I'm sure you guys all know that. I disagree with the 300G though, that is wayy too small for a fish that size with care requirements like a Mbu.

+1

I highly doubt a 300-500 gallon tank could handle the bio load of a fish like this. and like what was previously just said Puffers are very sensitive to poor water quality.
