he said if you have sand then NO rays
as their eyes look like snails above the sand

I'd have to see measurements to believe this 20+"s. That puffer looks no bigger then the span from the guys hand to elbow.

I don't see why this person would have a reason to lie about the size of a fish? But oh well

Cause if it's under 18 it's typical...... Who wants typical? People always lie about the size of fish, it's VERY common.... I have several rays that still haven't hit thier advertised size when bought after keeping them well over a year....

I'm NOT saying there's no way it's 20".... I'm saying I'd need to see it next to a measuring device to believe it. I've been wrong before and will be again I'm sure.

Do it DB, Do it! I'm cheering for ya bro.

If you're keeping enough sand in a tank for a 2' ray to bury itself all except the eyeballs then I'd be worried the sand is deep enough to cause problems with "dead" pockets.

Most of us that choose to keep rays on sand have just enough sand in there for the rays to stay entertained sifting, but not enough to completely bury themselves.

If worse comes to worse I can just keep them barebottom....

Thanks for the encouragement E!

Be even sweeter if the Dorado plays nice.... OR even better yet get something else from Africa to go over top the rays.... ;)

I totally agree though.... Half the fun of keeping fish is the little brainteaser of figuring out HOW to MAKE it work. Usually VERY determined people find a way to make it work.... I personally enjoy being driven by people that say it can't/won't/isn't going to happen... Makes it that much more fullfilling when it does happen. If people told me I was gonna win a world championship in the car audio world I probobly wouldn't have as the fire to succeed often comes from the naysayers.

I'd say give it a shot and see what happens; seems like you know what you're doing and have the right equipment (or at least the means to make them if necessary).

these two guys (maybe gals, who knows) have been living together since they were about 2.5". Now one is about 12", the other 11" or so (been about a year and a half). The bigger one (on left) is the "alpha puffer", and the smaller one on the right is less confrontational and usually will just hang out on his side of the tank. It'd be interesting to see what a group of them together would be like, and how they would interact...or not...with each other.

disclaimer: yes, tank is small. too small. I know. moving soon and am looking for a much bigger one.

Argree! Hey if you think you can pull it off. Do it! Sombody has got to be first to do MBU monster style!

Just wanted to add in something here. In the wild i've seen videos of pairs but not groups which leads me to think you may have issues when mature. Size wise its around 2.5 - 3 foot for these fish (inc tail) fishbase as far as i know works on holotype. Theres the possibility of regional variation in size so id say 2.5foot. Long term i think you'll have issues with them however puffers are intelligent fish with personalitys. You could very well get one nutter or more (or even issues if there are a pair trying to breed). Id keep them all but have an instant back up plan so you can split them if or more likely when they turn (unless you want carnage)
