Multiple species in one tank?

My midas was the most aggressive fish I have ever had. He killed my oscars, my green terror, my Jack Dempsey and my synodontis. They arent suppsed to be aggressive toward catfish or bottom feeders but he hated every body!! He did just fine on his own, though, after he killed off everyone else! Be careful with the midas/red devils...he might be a costly mistake.

the chocolate, sev and possibly the ebjd could work together.it may help to get young fish, let them grow-up together.i would try to get a schooling fish also.yes some species can crossbreed.sexing is not always easy, especially at small sizes.ask your LFS if they would trade/take back some fish.then you can get a few of each when small, then grow out to get males

What kind of schooling fish would work?

I decided against the Midas, lol.

I also visited both my local lfs and they were awesome. Great info and I can order whatever fish I decided to go with :)

if they can order for you, then you will have more research and choices to make, but that's good! for schoolers you can try:rainbow fish, silver dollars, filament barbs, giant danios.

Great ideas here. i do agree not to mix africans with american cichlids. as for midas's, any of the ones i bought from a lfs was very aggressive and beligerant. they also turned out to be midevils- a cross between labiatum and citrinellum. Of all the true midas's ive owned, i have found that they arent as aggressive as i once thought, although there not push overs by any means and can still open a can of whoop #%$ at any moment lol. since your buying from lfs i think it was a good idea passing on the lfs midas brand for your community idea:) Id go with the more docile cichlids you mentioned and if you ever decide to get online to order your fish, there will be a larger list to choose from. I keep aggressive fish but have been thinking about trying some of the mellower ones so i can keep a planted tank:) plus its hard to have a community when i keep pairs. so i decided to go with shoals of midas for my community with a few festae growouts and so far it works for me, but one day i will have a nice peaceful community:) Good luck

The bigger the schoolers are will be better,if your fish get used to them around, then maybe they don't eat them.SD get big/tall and are fast, most cichlids give up chasing them

What about the more docile of the Africans? Ive gathered that while they tend to be smaller, they are more aggressive whereas the SA are larger and less so. True or...? And as far as those docile species, someone mentioned Butterfly Rams and a Double Full Red Cockatoo. And I like them, apparently the BR are a fairly social fish and the DFRC is pretty timid. But my concern is their size. They only max out around 3" or so. Given that my two SA choices (the Chocolate and Gold Severum) are also more peaceful, do you think that they would work?

Also, any thoughts on the Yellow Lab? Or Exasperatus? Or the Peacock? These are available at my LFS without ordering, so thought I would check.

I did some more searching on schooling fish, I think I'm going with Australian Rainbows.

Plus a bichir or some type of cat (perferably one around the 5-10" range).
