Multitank Drip System

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Finally, it is done!
All 4 tanks are dripin' and drainin. I'm going to start a log with water test results throughout the week.
I have been dripping into my 110g for about a week without any issues, in fact, I upped the bio load on that tank a lot!

Egon, what is the gph on your tanks? I totally forgot what you told me.

Gotta love test kits. The results came back exactly the same on all 4 tanks: nitrate: 30-40ppm, nitrite: 0ppm, ammonia: >.25, pH: 7.6-7.8.
I really want to get some type of flow meter to measure how much I am putting in each tank. Does anyone have any links or info?

I am not sure what you are using but I use irrigation drip tubing connected to a tee fitting coming from washer hookup and go up through the attic and then down to tank. I also use the drip irrigation nozzles at 1gph x 2 for my 300g and each one looks like a small stream. You can see that there is drips but they are so close together that they are connected. So if your drips are actually seperated I would say its less then 1gph. I know there is formulas to figure out how much you should drip, but the only way I would know to figure out how much you are actually driping would be to capture what is draining out for exactly an hour then measure it. I am sure there is a more expensive way to measure it but why? Hope that helps.

so i slapped on a .5gph drip emitter on my 110g, 1gph on the 350g and 375g, and teed up a 1gph and .5gph on the 480g. That is a total 4gph for the 4 tanks. What do you guys think about the flow to tank size ratio?

Seems low to me except for possibly the 110. But that also depends on your stocking. I would say if you dont wanna use anymore water then that then to test your parameters alot and make sure they are staying where you are happy with them.

Also check this out, it will help you figure out where you may wanna be with each.

Valentine's Day Update: The results came back exactly the same (again) on all 4 tanks: nitrate: 30-40ppm, nitrite: 0ppm, ammonia: >.25, pH: 7.6-7.8.

These are parameters that I can live with if they stay this way. What do you guys think?

I increase flow in the summer when the water temps are up in the mid 80's. Fish are eating more.... and so on. Winter I cut back when my temps are 74 they just don't eat as much.

You can probably throttle back a bit until you see an increase, to know your bottom line, if that even matters to you. Not sure what water cost in SoCal? Or just test once a month and increase the drip accordingly as the summer approaches and activity/feeding increases.

Edit: Same results could be an issue? Might want to get a new test kit just for a sanity check...

Thankfully, we don't have the temperature swings here at the beach so the water temp is pretty constant. I heard you guys got snow in the desert?!?! I checked the water on my tanks in the garage and shame on me...those nitrates measured 80ppm+ !!!! So the test kit is working. Next round of water tests will happen mid next week.
