Not an individual fish, but I'd say some type of cichlid, so that people can see for themselves that certain fish can be relatively intelligent

Live-bearers like guppies, mollies, or platys. An Oscar or convicts. A betta.

I believe those are core fish and are great ways to enter the hobby. Each one is unique and they are all relatively hardy fish. I guess gold fish as well but I was never a big fan of goldfish.
