Must Visit Public Aquariums of North America? (FW focus)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would recommend the Newport Aquarium in Newport, KY. They have water tunnels, a lot of sharks, alligators, and a decent penguin exhibit. Also the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago is awesome, they have baby Beluga whales and a dolphin show along with some interesting exhibits that showcase fish native to the Great Lakes area. And the Niagara Aquarium at the falls has axolotls and giant sturgeon.

I am going to recommend aquariums that have good freshwater exhibits. Steinhart aquarium in SF, CA and Vancouver aquarium in Canada.

Thanks, planning some road trips on a budget next year. Last year I got to see the aquarium at Disney in florida and its the first time I have been to an aquarium in years, I could have spent a couple days just staring, so next year I'm packing the car and heading out without any extra baggage and can spend as much time as I like visiting as many as I can fit in for kicks.
I have to study my maps better but it looks like my first top is the Shedd (also must stop by the uboat museum while I am there)

I've been to a few of them.. most recently the Georgia Aquarium this past summer on my way down to FL. It's definitely more saltwater focused but still pretty awesome none the less. The Whale Sharks are crazy!

The big display at The Georgia Aquarium is impressive...But I enjoyed The Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga more.

Baltimore aquarium! The dolphin show is a plus :)

^ yes it is! Love that place, the jellyfish exhibit is amazing and so much more

We go to the National Aquarium in Baltimore at least once a month...often more. If you're in the area, an annual pass is well worth it!

Shedd Aquarium in Chicago is also amazing.

Matt

Holy crap im so jealous, i wish i could go there that often!! They have such a great setup, got some pics of it, will only upload the unique guys i got good pics of, i love the giant australian lungfish theyre so huge at the Baltimore. Also recommend Newport, it's about an hour from me and I like to go about once a year. The 'pet the sharks' section is cool, and last time I was there they had an incredible jellyfish exhibit going on.
I think they also have some of the only ray sharks in North America.

Aquarium of the Americas in New Orleans is the coolest one I have seen ...... With a Mississippi river section (huge gar and paddle fish) and upstairs was a huge Amazon river setup with *lots of FULL grown cichlids. I have not been there since Katrina(in which I heard they had some casualties)so I can only hope it is still there and as cool.

I've been to the Aquarium of the Americas since Katrina and was very disappointed. The Amazon exhibit was full of blood parrots!
