My 15" Sun Catfish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Lol tnx for calling me out guys. It is just too difficult to work the size of a fish by eyesight. Even with reference it is tough. We don't know how big his hand is, and cannot see the full length of the fish in the pics. Am I saying he is wrong? No. I feel these fish can and should reach that length or more in the long run. I am just not convinced with what I have seen. :) Fantastic looking fish though. haha.

Sorry, Cliff. Not calling out anyone. It's a simple request from all us interested to know for dead sure and you never have accused or even hinted FASTLANE's not true, quite the opposite, you expressed a validated and reasonable doubt but as a gentleman that you are. I don't see anything in your post I linked or in this one that can be taken as personal by any sane person. There is nothing wrong with voicing a doubt when it is expressed politely and with a respectful consideration for the other person.

Anyway, FASTLANE, can you/will you do it for all of our sake? You don't have to take him out of the water. Stick a ruler/tape next to the front glass and use a large net to position the fish flat against the glass.

cool! Hes a fat big guy :D

I know I was joking lol. :) But yeah interested to see the size. May be an aquarium record, at least for MFK lol. Hope that my guys will be that size in a few years. They are growing slowly but surely. Once they get to be permanent residents in the 400 gal I'm sure they will flourish. They need to be around 14-15" since this is going to be my mid growout pond. :)

Sorry to derail the thread, didnt wanna make a new one just for a single question, but are sun cats active? Or not active. I was gonna get 2 and replace my 4 like pim in my big tank because i like the colors and they remind me of the cats I catch at my pond.

This merits a new thread. Or you could use a search on the MFK catfish section. GENERALLY, suns will hide more when alone or in a small group and when small/young and when there is too much light or when they are bullied, etc. A group of say ten 8"-12"-ers swims in the open often and is quite a sight I was lucky enough to behold at one LFS. There were no hiding places though but they didn't seem to need them at all.

And then of course you have all kinds of scenarios in between these two extremes.

As you can see, FASTLANE's cat is huge and still hides all the day time.

Sorry I've been MIA for a while but work has been hectic. So I'm trying to figure out how to measure this guy and putting a tape measure up to the fish isn't an option since he hides under rocks and spooks easily. He only comes out when I have lunar lights on to eat and it's too dark to photo. I can say he's outgrown my 75 gal. And I have nowhere else to house him. If he was active it would be a problem but he is stationary most of the day so it's not an emergency but I'm looking to move him to someone with a larger tank. I could measure him but would need to take him out of the water to do so. I will try to get some better pics and if anyone in the north NJ area is interested in him let me know.
