My 1st Convict Spawn

The parents will eventually start eating or killing the fry if they are left together, once the parents are ready to spawn again. Either the parents or the fry will need to be removed if you want the fry to survive.

Usually takes 4-6 weeks from hatching. On my first batch it was only about 3 weeks, but they had the added stress of being moved from the 55 community to the 20 long. I'm about 3 weeks in on the current batch and they are still being cared for.

I'll probably leave them in for a while on this one and let the parents snack on some to get the extra protein. I'm just using them for feeders for my other cichlids and catfish anyway. They breed so much that it's almost impossible to even give them away.

Edit: If you have enough hiding places and the tank is large enough, it's possible that some of the fry will survive when the parents turn on them. But once they turn they will attack any of the old fry they see on sight.

lol, its been about 2 months and there still caring for there frys! that and i think its cause i dont have a heater in there ( temp stays around 74 ot 75 ) the lower temps make them pron to not lay eggs as fast, or so that i learned anyways. frys are only 1/2 inch right now so yea.

Not sure on mine. There was an incident last week where the male turned on the female and was keeping her locked in one of the top corners of the tank. Every time she moved he would attack her again. He was still guarding the fry though. I gave him a time out in the 55g with the 5"/3.5" JD pair, who picked on the male Con for about an hour, basically to give the female a break.

I put the male back in with her and she started attacking him too, but it was more like a 'pairing off' dance (lip locking, circling each other, etc). Apparently they worked it out over that night cause the next day they were best friends again. I didn't see any fry harmed during the entire thing though, and they are still being protected. I don't expect it to be much longer before they start getting picked off though. The 20L tank is going to start getting really crowded with 300+ 1/2" fry in there.
